Reflections on the Internship: Katie

Katie joined our intern team in July 2018. During her time here, she decided to extend her year-long internship to an eighteen-month internship, and we’ve been thankful for an extra six months with her! One special way Katie has blessed our residents has been through teaching them line dancing! We have seen her grow as a leader and a counselor in her time with us, and we are excited to see how the Lord will use her to strengthen His church in Canada! Katie recently concluded her internship and returned home to Ontario, but we wanted to share with you her reflections on her past eighteen months learning and serving at Vision of Hope.

Please visit our website for more information about the internship, or email Annie Martin, our Intern Coordinator, at amartin@faithlafayette.org if you want to apply to serve as a VOH intern.

What is one cherished memory from your time at VOH?

As I have been here at VOH, It is hard think back on one of my favourite memories, as I have so many with the interns/staff as well as with the residents. One of my favourite memories is when we had a Halloween party at some staff members’ house. We all got dressed up and just had a great time fellowshipping together. There was a lot of laughter I can assure you. It is definitely a memory I look back on with lots of fond memories, along with the many dance parties in the intern apartment.

How has the Lord grown you during your time here?

When I first came to VOH I didn’t expect the Lord to use this year to grow me as much as he has. The Lord has used every aspect of this internship. Living in the intern apartment and having so many close friendships that point me to the Lord. Working on shift and serving the residents, they have pushed me in my reliance on the Lord. In constantly seeking to love them and serve them, the Lord has shown me more of his grace and love. Being here has really shown me more of my sin and has really helped me understand how God’s grace gives hope in every area of our life. Being here has also shown me the importance of self-counselling and rehearsing God’s truth to myself.

What are your plans going forward? How do you think this internship has helped you prepare for your future?

As I am leaving the internship, I am returning home to Ontario Canada, where I am planning to serve in my church and work to complete my ACBC counselling hours. I will be looking for a job as well. I am looking foreword to growing in my love for counselling and serving those around me and being able to spend time with my family. This internship has helped prepare me for future ministry, I was able to complete all my exams here, learn about excellent resources and observe multiple counsellors. This has helped prepare me for future counselling. It has also been a huge blessing to grow in loving those around me. I am excited to take all I have learned back home with me and see how the Lord will use me there.

Why would you recommend this internship to other women interested in biblical counseling, social work or women’s ministry?

If you are looking for something to do for a year and you love the Lord and want to serve, I would definitely recommend this internship. This internship can help you learn more about what biblical counselling is and it really grows you personally as well. This is a great opportunity to serve the Lord for a year and for the Lord to grow you in so many wonderful and unexpected ways.
