Review
In our Adult Bible Fellowships we have observed in 1 Samuel Chapter 5-6 that God can glorify Himself without Man’s help. Our God is not a god who needs to be setup like Dagon. Also God will make Himself known to people, even the Philistines so that they understand who He is. Lastly, He will be faithful to His word, no matter what, even when His people ignore His word.
Some takeaways from last week were:
- God does not need man, but He wants to dwell with man at a heart level.
- God will come down to our level so we can understand Him
- God is Holy and Merciful: God has made provision for us, to protect us from Himself. Most notably in Christ
Sunday
1 Sam 7:1-17 – Ebenezer: Repentance, Mercy, and the Lord’s Help
In preparation for our lesson on Sunday please read the section listed above and make note what stands out to you in the narrative. Is there any repetition, is there any dialogue that seems particularly significant etc. Then please think about the following discussion questions.
- What do you notice in the text that helps you understand what genuine repentance looks like?
- How do you contrast the battles with the Philistines in chapter 7 with what we saw in Chapter 4? What is similar and what is different?
- When you think about the phrase “thus far the Lord has helped us”, how has the Lord helped Israel thus far? How do you view the Lord’s help in your life.
- How does Samuel’s ministry to Israel help you think about Christ’s ministry to us?
