We serve a good God. In Psalm 119:68, the psalmist declares to God, “You are good and do only good; teach me Your statutes.” (NLT) Believing the truth that God is always good (with no “bad” at all in Him) is essential in our daily lives. When we believe that we serve a good God, we will trust God fully and have peace in the midst of any circumstances. It is easy to see how even this single Truth can be so freeing, as we are tempted to worry and fret. We do not need to be burdened with the cared of this world – we serve a good God, and He is up to something good!
Beginning on our series on Truth, I’ve asked some of our staff and interns to share how Truth has impacted their lives. We hope you will be encouraged, as one of our interns, Christy, shares what she has been learning about the truth that God is good:
“Meditating on Truth is a daily emphasis here at VOH, one that has never been accentuated so much in my life as during my past year here. Recently, God has been showing me some of the things I believe about Him are lies, which directly influences my view of others and difficult situations I encounter. It affects my relationships with those close to me. A Truth I have been focusing on to change my thinking – ‘transform my mind’ – is that God is good. Some days, I don’t believe this. Some days, I doubt His goodness, His desire to do what is best for me, and bring Himself the most glory in the process. One Truth that has been helpful for me to meditate on is Psalm 31:19, ‘How great is the goodness You have stored up for those who fear You. You lavish it on those who come to You for protection, blessing them before the watching world.’ God’s goodness is stored up for me, as I continually choose to fear Him…and even when I don’t. He pours it over me in abundance, and my life is a testimony of this to those around me. It’s by God’s rich grace that He does this, and so is His choosing to show me the lies I believe. He blesses me by showing me these so that I can turn back to Him, and He can help me change my thinking, drawing me closer to the likeness of His Son.”
The goodness of God is a good truth and one that ultimately brings freedom when we are tempted to think of God negatively (John 8:31-32). The Bible reveals God’s good character and that He has good in plan for us (Rom. 8:28-29).
