Many of us struggle with feeling alone. Does God really care? Is He involved in my life? And if so, does He really have a plan for me? The Truth that answers these questions is found in the Bible, and it has the power to transform our entire lives.
Psalm 139 is a wonderful, encouraging passage that addresses these questions well. Almost the entire Psalm focuses on the fact that the Lord indeed knows and is intimately involved in each of our lives. Verses such as verse 13, “For You formed my inward parts; you wove me in my mother’s womb.” and verse 16, “Your eyes have seen my unformed substance; and in Your book were all written the days that were ordained for me, when as yet there was not one of them.” tell us that the Lord knew us deeply and had everything planned before we were even in existence! Verses 17-18 exclaim, “How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How vast is the sum of them! If I should count them, they would outnumber the sand.” When we feel like God is not there, we must fight our deceived feelings with what we know to be true: God knows all about us, and He cares for us deeply. He IS involved.
One of our residents touched on this Truth when she was sharing with me what she has been learning. She said:
“Truth is the firm foundation that is the solid rock – the only thing I can stand confidently, fearlessly on. It is above my feelings, circumstances, hopes, fears, desires, and dreams. The Truth gives me hope that God has a purpose in creating me and giving me breath when I’m faint, overwhelmed, weary, and hopeless. It is my hope whether I am complacent or excited. Everything else will fail, but God’s Truth will never fail. It is the belief and faith in the Truth that keeps me going.”
How freeing it is indeed to know that we have a source of real, reliable, never failing Truth found in the Word of God, and that we do not have to live by and believe our feelings! How freeing the Truth is indeed!
