Freeing Truth: Part 7

We all struggle with desiring things other than God. Sometimes we even find ourselves putting a good thing above our relationship with God. When this happens, we know that these things have become an idol in our lives.

It has been said that an idol can be defined in this way: when you are willing to sin in order to get something, or when you sin when you don’t get it, that thing, feeling, person, etc. is an idol to you.

The Bible is clear that following idols brings great bondage. Jonah 2:8 states that “Those who cling to worthless idols forfeit the grace that could be theirs.” But there is hope and freedom in the truth that God is worthy of our total worship and desire!

One of our residents shared with me how these truths have impacted her live. She shared:

I was following my idols and worshiping them. I regarded my idols and left my Lord behind. I did all I could to protect my idols. Being at VOH and really digging into God’s Word has helped me to realize that Jesus really is the answer!

Jesus said that the truth will set you free and you shall be free indeed. I have been able to, by God’s grace, start putting my idols to death and following Jesus again. I am being set free more and more every day by God’s truth, and now I am wanting my idols less and less.”

How powerful is the Truth of the Word of God that it frees us from such slavery to sin! Stay tuned for more encouraging testimonies!

Bethany Dunn
Bethany heard about Vision of Hope while attending Word of Life Bible Institute in Florida. When she began praying about what God wanted her to do after graduating, He kept bringing Vision of Hope to her mind. Knowing that there was an internship available, Bethany applied, was accepted, and began her internship with VOH in July, 2012. Since then she has been amazed at the opportunities God has given her to learn more about His Word and how it applies to everyday life. Bethany now serves on staff at Vision of Hope.
