“Everyone experiences anger, but few of us handle it in a Christ-centered way or know how to help others biblically.” For the past several weeks, Jocelyn has been leading the VOH residents through the book Uprooting Anger: Biblical Help for a Common Problem by Robert D. Jones, which has caused quite a bit of soul-searching to occur within our house!! The conversation and discussion of this text within the group counseling sessions each morning has been paramount to the identification of the root of sin for many of the residents.
It has been a blessing to hear the girls making connections throughout their days, about the root of anger and how it infects every area of their lives. It is apparent that they are being genuinely challenged! One resident said, “A blessing from my week has been reading the ‘Anger book’, I guess”, with an obvious inflection that showed that it was not necessarily enjoyable to be stretched and convicted in this area, but that it was certainly appreciated.
Concealed and revealed anger are each discussed in the book and learning about the distinctions between these two has given the girls a closer look at the effect and form that anger can take in one’s heart and life. At the end of this week, the book is coming to a finish and Jocelyn intends for the girls to spend an entire class session, reflecting and reviewing the book, documenting and processing the lessons learned and how to apply them. Also, the girls are going to write thank you letters to the author, Mr. Jones, expressing their gratitude for his efforts in writing this life-changing book.
