At Vision of Hope we help ladies with addictions of all types. Some come to us seeking help with drug, alcohol, or sexual addiction while others come seeking help with other addictive behaviors like eating disorders or self-harm habits. There are many attending sins, too, like deceitfulness which accompany these struggles.
What many of us do not want to admit is that each of us struggles with some kind of addiction – some entangling sin that is a constant battle for us. We cannot avoid temptation, and Satan is a master at knowing our weak spots. This week, we would like to introduce a very helpful resource that any believer can benefit from. It is a book entitled – Addictions: A Banquet in the Grave by Dr. Edward Welch.
Addictions: A Banquet in the Grave is a book filled with biblical truth that, when applied to the life of a believer, can set the captive free. Welch takes his readers through the Bible to address questions such as: Is an addiction a sickness, sin, or a combination of both? How did I end up in this pit? What does it mean to know God and fear Him? How do I start living in victory and start saying “no” to this addiction? Welch majors on the practical application of scripture in the life of both the addict, and the one who is wishing to help a struggling friend. At the end of each chapter, Welch has a section entitled “Practical Theology” which further helps the reader understand how to specifically apply God’s Word to his own life.
Throughout his book, Welch gives great hope and help which can be applied to the life of any believer, as they struggle with sin. In an encouraging remark, Welch writes: “The reason we can fight with confidence against our sinful desires is that we belong to the One who is righteous. He has given us His Spirit, who leads us into righteousness. Sin no longer has the right to tell us what to do.”
