New Priorities
One of my priorities this year was to be more involved in the lives of students at Faith Christian School. I really want to understand and relate to our students on a personal basis and so I realized that I was going to need to plan to make time in my daily schedule. I also wanted to be sure to be genuine and transparent with the students during the personal exchanges that we have during the course of the day.
Plan of Attack
Classes begin at 7:50 with homeroom followed by 1st Period. I am making it a priority to be in the high school hallway by 7:30 each morning. During this time, I try to focus on every student by saying “good morning” and I try to specifically ask 10 – 15 students how their classes are going, how they did on a test or project, what sports or extracurricular activities they are involved with, etc. I can also use this time to follow through on student expectations as well as encouraging teachers to be in the hallway before classes begin.
Another practice that I have started to follow is to carry a legal pad (and most recently an iPad) to write down reminders. This might sound very trite, but it has helped me immensely by following up with students about certain questions or situations that we had discussed earlier. Instead of saying “I’ll get back to you” and forgetting about this conversation, I now make it a point to check over my reminders and follow up with these students. I believe that the students have really appreciated the follow up and accountability that this practice has afforded me.
