As we study the book of 1 Samuel this blog series will help us prepare for our Sunday morning Adult Bible Fellowship discussions as well as review what was learned from the past week. Here are some guides to help you get the most out of the book of 1 Samuel as well as the first lesson.
Book of 1 Samuel
I would encourage everyone to read the Book of 1 Samuel in 1 sitting if possible. It will take you about 1 hour and 40 minutes according to this website. I was able to do it a bit faster, but I had a lot of espresso that day :) . If you can’t do it in one sitting at least try to do it in a few large chunks. Old Testament narrative really lends itself to be understood best by reading in larger sections.
Also this is a handy article that includes some more bible reading tips. Listening to it on Audio bible is a great alternative if you are driving or want to do some other housework while listening. I like Bible gateway, but there are lots of options. This sermon by Mark Dever on the whole book of 1 Samuel is also helpful.
Sunday
So in preparation for the first lesson of first Samuel please read the section listed below and think about the following discussion questions.
- What are some of the challenges that Hannah is facing?
- What stands out to you about what Hannah prays for?
- Who else has the Lord used in their barren situation to glorify Himself?
- What stands out to you in Hannah’s song…what sort of progression do you see?
Pray that God’s living and active word would help us cultivate a greater love for Him and others as we study His word together.
