What is the Gospel?

1 Corinthians 15:1-10

Dear Parents,

Today we started our yearlong study on the Gospel and the importance of it in our lives.  Here is the lesson that was taught today to introduce what the Gospel is.  We will then divide into the specific parts of the Gospel and have lessons on the Holy God, Fallen Man, Promised Messiah, and the Way of Salvation.  Our hope is that the lessons will provide encouragement and inspection on the part of all students.

The Gospel = Great News

The Gospel = Central Theme of the Entire Bible

The Gospel = Only Way to be Right with God

What is the Gospel?

  1. Christ died for our sins.
    1. All of us have sinned.(Romans 3:23)
    2. Our sin separates us from God and requires our death. (Romans 6:23)
    3. Someone must die for our sin, but God loved us even in our sin and died for us. (Romans 5:8)
    4. Christ was buried(Matthew 27: 57-66)
      1. Joseph of Arimathea took down Jesus’s body and wrapped it up and placed it in a tomb.
      2. He rolled a stone in front of the entrance.
      3. The stone was sealed.
      4. There were guards placed in front of the tomb.
      5. Christ rose from the dead (Luke 24:1-10)
        1. The women who followed Jesus from Galilee went to bring spices and to visit the tomb.
        2. When they arrived the stone was rolled away.
        3. Two angels appeared to them saying, He is not here, He is risen from the dead.
        4. Christ appeared to over 500 different people after His resurrection.
          1. Why do you think it was important for Jesus to appear to so many people after He rose again?

Application:  (These are great questions to discuss with your child about what the lesson was about and how it applies to them.)

  • In verse 1 and 2 it talks about the key to the Gospel’s effectiveness.  In your small group discuss what it means to “believe it for no purpose”.
  • In verse 10 it says that “by God’s grace I am what I am”.  How does this apply to your life?  What should be your attitude and actions based upon this grace?
