How to Pray

Prayer

Matthew 6:5-13

Parents,

Today we are taking the time to talk about the importance of prayer.  One of the areas that we will be working on in our 3rd Sunday services is strengthening our prayer life.  Here is the lesson that was taught.  Ask your teen to answer some of the questions for excellent talking points.

Simple acrostic to remember the process of prayer

Adoration

Then David praised the Lord in the sight of all the assembly. David said, May You be praised, Lord God of our father Israel, from eternity to eternity. Yours, Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the splendor and the majesty, for everything in the heavens and on earth belongs to You. Yours, Lord, is the kingdom, and You are exalted as head over all. Riches and honor come from You, and You are the ruler of everything. Power and might are in Your hand, and it is in Your hand to make great and to give strength to all. Now therefore, our God, we give You thanks and praise Your glorious name.” (1 Chronicles 29:10–13, HCSB)

  • What is a way you could express your gratitude to the Lord?

Confession

How joyful is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered! How joyful is the man the Lord does not charge with sin and in whose spirit is no deceit! When I kept silent, my bones became brittle from my groaning all day long. For day and night Your hand was heavy on me; my strength was drained as in the summer’s heat. Selah Then I acknowledged my sin to You and did not conceal my iniquity. I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,” and You took away the guilt of my sin. Selah” (Psalm 32:1–5, HCSB)

  • Why is it important to confess your sin on a regular basis?

Thanksgiving

I will thank Yahweh with all my heart; I will declare all Your wonderful works. I will rejoice and boast about You; I will sing about Your name, Most High.” (Psalm 9:1–2, HCSB)

  • What is the difference between adoration and Thanksgiving?

Supplication

“Therefore, you should pray like this: Our Father in heaven, Your name be honored as holy. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And do not bring us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. [For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.]” (Matthew 6:9–13, HCSB)

  • What is the type of requests being made in this verse?  Do you think we should be praying for Ferraris and ponies?
