Introduction: When was the last time you were completely moved by how great God is?
Understanding who God is is crucial to the understanding of the greatness of the Gospel message. We will be studying God for 6 weeks. We will strive to understand better the complexities of His awesomeness and then be moved to understand how incredible it is that this incredible God moved to save us by giving up His own Son.
Romans 11:33-36 (HCSB), “Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and the knowledge of God! How unsearchable His judgments and untraceable His ways! For who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been His counselor? Or who has ever first given to Him, and has to be repaid? For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever. Amen”
We can never fully understand the complexities of our God, and would we really want to worship a God who was easily understandable? Let us look at one of the great features of our God.
God the Great Creator
Turn to Genesis 1. Read Genesis 1:1-2:3.
God Made Everything in 7 Literal Days.
Day 1: God made the heavens and earth. The earth was dark and God made light. God called the light day and the darkness night.
Day 2: God separated the water from the water and placed an expanse between the waters. God called the expanse water.
Day 3: God gathered the sky in one place and let dry land appear. He called the land earth and the gathering of the waters He called seas. God made seed bearing plants and fruit trees.
Day 4: God made 2 lights to separate the day and the night. God placed them in the sky to provide light on earth.
Day 5: God made the sea creatures and birds.
Day 6: God made all the rest of the animals. God made a man in His own image. He made man to rule over all the earth.
God’s greatness shining through His creation
- God owns everything
- Psalm 50:10, “For every beast of the forest is mine, the cattle on a thousand hills.”
i. It is hard for us to understand the importance of this verse. In their culture the person who owned the most livestock was the richest person who had the ultimate control over the community. You could not plow your land without the cattle. You could not fertilize your crops without the cattle. So for God to be able to look out at every animal in every forest and on all cattle in the hills and to be able to yell out those are mine was significant to them.
- Deuteronomy 10:14, “Behold, to the Lord your God belong heaven and the heaven of heavens, the earth with all that is in it.”
i. “According to the Scriptures, every sky on every planet in every solar system in every corner of the universe belongs to God. He is the owner and creator of them all and sovereign over them all. Nothing that exists belongs to anyone else other than God.” Matt Chandler
ii. “There is not a square inch in the whole domain of our human existence over which Christ, who is sovereign over all, does not cry: ‘Mine!’” Abraham Kuyper
- God is completely self-sufficient in His creation.
- We cannot make anything without having the materials and skill necessary to make something.
i. If I was to make a house then I would have to the supplies given to me in order to convert them into a house. God makes His own material.
ii. If I was to paint a picture, someone would have to provide me with the supplies necessary to make a painting, but we would still be in trouble because I lack the skill. God speaks and things are creation.
