Memories that will last a lifetime

Several students had an opportunity to travel to Mexico City this year for J Term.  We asked each of them to highlight their trip from their perspective and share some things that the Lord allowed them to learn and experience.  Liz Pruim is a senior at FCS.  Please read Liz’s blog and continue to pray for her and other team members throughout the year.

This missions trip was an eye opening experience. Not only was I able to share the gospel and bring hope in Christ to children from an impoverished area in 1205356Mexico city, but I was also graced with the eye-opening opportunity to see the biggest Pyramids in the world (… okay pyramid with the biggest base). These pyramids were built by ancient Mayan rulers to offer sacrifices to their gods, snake, sun, and moon. Men would be forced to take a treacherous path to the top of the moon pyramid where they would be sacrificed to the gods. They were supposed to walk bravery and with dignity to their demise. Dozens of small altars were scattered along the path. Each with a human sacrifice being lead to slaughter. Neighboring tribes were in a constant state of conflict with surrounding nations to gain more sacrifices. All of this death, destruction, and misery were in vain. Modern society equates to this image. As a culture people live to please themselves, to conform and not be judged. Mindlessly going in our own directions, not Gods, we offer ourselves as sacrifices to the idols of this world, we consume worldly ideas, we die in vain. As Christians we need to focus on Christ to save us. He needs to be our hope and give us hope in this world. While we’re here, he gives us the strength to persevere under the pressures of this world. Near the end of the trip, Mr. Grass gave us a challenge. Find a biblical word or phrase to fuel our next year. I chose hope in Christ. Christ strengthens us no matter the challenge.
