November is National Adoption Month, and as we are thinking about why adoption is important, it is vital to recognize what high value the Bible places on children.
We see Jesus interacting with children and placing high value on them in Luke 18: “People were also bringing babies to Jesus for him to place his hands on them. When the disciples saw this, they rebuked them. But Jesus called the children to him and said, ‘Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.’” (Luke 18:15-17) This passage tell us that our Lord cares for children enough to even give them His Kingdom when they place their simple faith in Him!
Again, we see in Matthew 18: “At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, ‘Who, then, is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?’ He called a little child to him, and placed the child among them. And he said: ‘Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.’” We see here that not only does Christ ask us to welcome children, but that coming to the Lord with a child-like faith is exactly what He desires. A lowly, humble, servant who relies on the Lord and trusts in Him fully is considered very great in the Kingdom.
These passages reflect but one reason why adoption is so important. Adoption is important because our Savior values children so much and desires to draw them close. But, “How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?” (Rom. 10:14) Children without families may be in danger of never hearing the Gospel! How incredible it is that we have the opportunity of adoption to help a child to grow up grounded in their faith and trust in the Lord!
Join me in praying for and supporting adoption agencies and ministries, and consider being a part of the blessing of adoption yourself! This opportunity would surely make a huge impact in eternity.
