The significance of grandparents in a child’s life cannot be overstated, and their influence lives on for generations. Proverbs 17:6 says, “Grandchildren are the crown of old men, and the glory of sons is their fathers.” Deuteronomy 4:9 gives this powerful command–“Only give heed to yourself and keep your soul diligently, so that you do not forget the things which your eyes have seen and they do not depart from your heart all the days of your life; but make them known to your sons and your grandsons.”
One way that Faith Christian School values these relationships is through our annual Grandparents’ Day in the elementary school. Around 400 guests, including grandparents and close “grandfriends,” visited FCS on Oct. 7 to make memories together with their grandchildren.
Building “Firm Foundations”
In the program portion of the morning, 13 pianists provided a lovely prelude, and the 6th grade band sounded strong and played very well. Children in grades 3, 5, and 6 sang about the role of grandparents in laying foundations for life and eternity. These songs tenderly tugged at many hearts and memories, including mine! Other grades presented music that lifted up Christ as our glorious foundation. One positive comment I heard among many was from a grandparent who was amazed that kindergarteners, 1st, and 2nd graders could memorize and present such wonderful songs.
The 5th grade also presented a fun and very creative interpretation of “The Three Little Pigs” that illustrated the principles of the wise man and the foolish man from Matthew 7.
Time with Grandchildren
Children were able to spend time with grandparents both before and after the program. We appreciate LifeTouch’s hard work and generosity in providing a complimentary picture for each set of grandparents–hopefully making the time in line worth the wait. (We are already talking about ways to reduce the time spent in line next time.)
Teachers had prepared their rooms and activities to include dozens of visitors for some special one-on-one classroom time after the program. This is always a very rewarding and meaningful highlight of the day!
Supporting Elementary Progress
At Grandparents’ Day events over the years, grandparents and others have committed their prayers and generously provided around $20,000 for several key projects to support our elementary students. These gifts have enabled FCS to acquire more library books, new science and technology equipment, plus a high quality, outdoor basketball goal.
This year, over $7,000 was given toward the purchase of a mobile netbook computer lab and charging cart. This was our highest amount ever, including matching funds from a private foundation. We are close to what is needed but not there yet. Grandparents (or anyone) can still give to FCS for this project through Oct. 31.

Thank you to all our directors–Miss Hill (K5 and accompanist), Mr. Wright (band), and Mr. Jones, who is in his first year with us in elementary music. Great job, everyone! Thanks also go to all the parents who provided our scrumptious refreshments and served in any way throughout the morning.
