How to Have a Great Summer – Part 2

OK, so you probably have a nice wish list of what your totally cool summer would be, like

  • Go to an amusement park
  • Hang out with friends
  • Go to a concert
  • Make some money (somehow without working too hard)
  • Go to the mall (girls)
  • Play video games (guys) all day on-line with people that are not able to totally destroy you
  • Go to a summer camp with some friends
  • Visit someone away from home

I’m sure you have plenty of other things on your list, hopefully not things that fit in the category of illegal or immoral, but let’s face it, that is the direction some head.

Here is a second way to have a great summer: read.  (Humor me.  Keep reading.)

Now, before you click and leave, let me give you some sarcastic reasons why not to read:

  1. Hello – Like you will ever need to read…road signs, instructions at a job, paperwork purchasing a home, cooking, purchasing a car, taxes.
  2. You want to get ripped off every time you go to make a major purchase and can’t read the agreement.
  3. You want to rely on others in life all the time to tell you what things say or don’t say.
  4. You don’t want to learn because you know everything already.
  5. You don’t really want to know what is in the food you are eating or the crazy energy drink in your hand (that could cause major damage).
  6. You would rather have your brain slow down and even stop functioning earlier in life.

Here are the serious reasons for why to read for any who care:

  1. You will be reading your whole life.  Investing the time to improve your reading now and learning to enjoy it will only help you.
  2. Reading will open a whole new world for you.
  3. Learning to read well will help you improve in school and life.
  4. Spending time reading will expand your knowledge and put you in a better position to help others.
  5. It’s much more fulfilling and beneficial to you than just watching a movie.
  6. Because most of you as teens have some extra time on your hands during the summer – a perfect time to read.

I’m sure parents, and you as a teen, can come up with tons of other reasons to read and not read, but I dare you to pick up  a good book and read it.  Let me suggest one I have recently read, but I don’t think most teens have the gutts to read.  The book is RADICAL by David Platt.  It may just radically impact your life.

Enjoy reading.
