your jerseys should say something other than Faith Christian&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Having an athletic program at your school can either be a real joy or a real pain in the neck.\u00a0 As long as the athletic program fits into the mission of the school, I believe that there\u00a0are a lot of positives that come from offering athletics.\u00a0 But, if athletics is the tail that wags the dog &#8211; then there comes a lot of challenges along with that. <!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Mission Minded Goals<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Emphasize <strong>character over talent<\/strong>.\u00a0 We&#8217;ve seen time and again that talent can only take a team so far.\u00a0 When character is evaluated and emphasized, teams will be known for being a team of character, not a bunch of characters.<\/li>\n<li>Work with and <strong>train your coaches<\/strong>.\u00a0 Before the season even starts, it is vital to have expectation meetings with all of your coaches.\u00a0 Having coaches that are committed Christians and hard workers is really important to building a strong foundation to your athletic program.\u00a0 Coaches that emphasize fundamentals, learning\/teaching, and who display a godly character both on and off the field are worth their weight in gold.<\/li>\n<li>Have <strong>high expectations<\/strong> for your parents and fans.\u00a0 Buying a ticket does NOT give any person the right to berate an official or to cause a scene.\u00a0 Parents and fans need to be encouragers to cheer and motivate our team.\u00a0 Bringing attention to oneself by yelling, being obnoxious, causing a scene, etc. is not acceptable.\u00a0 We want every person to have an enjoyable time at the\u00a0athletic event, and we want to have a God-honoring testimony to the officials and to the fans of the other school.\u00a0 When a person gets &#8220;out of their cage&#8221;, it not only is an embarrassment to that person, it does not put the school in a good position to impact others for the cause of Christ!<\/li>\n<li>Encourage\u00a0<strong>student participation<\/strong>\u00a0in a Cheer Block and\/or Pep Band.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.faithlafayette.org\/school\/too-much-at-stake\/pep-band-toned-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-612\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-612\" src=\"https:\/\/faith-blog-assets.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/20170523134044\/pep-band.toned_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/faith-blog-assets.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/20170523134044\/pep-band.toned_1.jpg 2760w, https:\/\/faith-blog-assets.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/20170523134044\/pep-band.toned_1-300x271.jpg 300w, https:\/\/faith-blog-assets.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/20170523134044\/pep-band.toned_1-768x695.jpg 768w, https:\/\/faith-blog-assets.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/20170523134044\/pep-band.toned_1-665x601.jpg 665w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a>We have given a lot of emphasis to our Pep Band in the past, and they have done a great job in creating such a positive, home court advantage for our teams.\u00a0 Our teams love to play at home, and I have heard them say many times, &#8220;I hope our Pep Band is going to play&#8221;.\u00a0 The members of our Pep Band almost feel a part of the team, and they do bring a great element to our FCS Experience.\u00a0 This year we have also had great participation from our Cheer Block.\u00a0 We have between 80 &#8211; 90 members on our cheer block!\u00a0 They do an outstanding job.\u00a0 The Cheer Block is student-led,\u00a0 all dressing in similar attire.\u00a0 Their focus is to only be a positive voice at the game.\u00a0 They don&#8217;t taunt, distract, or try to intimidate the other team.\u00a0 The Cheer Block cheers for our team &#8211; and they have a GREAT time!\u00a0 At a recent away tourney, we actually had several students from another school join our cheer block towards the end of the game because they wanted to be a part of the clean fun that our students were experiencing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.faithlafayette.org\/school\/too-much-at-stake\/cheerblock-toned-3\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-621\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-large wp-image-621\" src=\"https:\/\/faith-blog-assets.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/20170523134040\/cheerblock.toned_2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"324\" srcset=\"https:\/\/faith-blog-assets.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/20170523134040\/cheerblock.toned_2.jpg 3008w, https:\/\/faith-blog-assets.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/20170523134040\/cheerblock.toned_2-300x157.jpg 300w, https:\/\/faith-blog-assets.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/20170523134040\/cheerblock.toned_2-768x401.jpg 768w, https:\/\/faith-blog-assets.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/20170523134040\/cheerblock.toned_2-665x348.jpg 665w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Modeling Christ<\/h2>\n<p>Modeling Christ-likeness during an athletic contest is sometimes difficult.\u00a0 Sometimes athletes are put in the position of responding quickly, when things don&#8217;t go well for them.\u00a0 The Bible tells us that &#8220;out of the mouth pours the overflow of our hearts&#8221;&#8230; so basically, what comes out of our mouth is a reflection of what is in our heart.\u00a0 When an athlete or coach responds poorly, that can serve as a great teaching opportunity for the school &#8211; if it chooses to do the hard things.\u00a0 From my bleacher seat &#8211; there is too much at stake for the school NOT to do anything!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.faithlafayette.org\/school\/too-much-at-stake\/indiana-kitchen-classic-team-prayer-edit-4\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-624\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-624\" src=\"https:\/\/faith-blog-assets.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/20170523134038\/Indiana-Kitchen-Classic-team-prayer.edit_3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"126\" srcset=\"https:\/\/faith-blog-assets.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/20170523134038\/Indiana-Kitchen-Classic-team-prayer.edit_3.jpg 3040w, https:\/\/faith-blog-assets.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/20170523134038\/Indiana-Kitchen-Classic-team-prayer.edit_3-300x190.jpg 300w, https:\/\/faith-blog-assets.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/20170523134038\/Indiana-Kitchen-Classic-team-prayer.edit_3-768x487.jpg 768w, https:\/\/faith-blog-assets.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/20170523134038\/Indiana-Kitchen-Classic-team-prayer.edit_3-665x422.jpg 665w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a>Athletics\u00a0can be\u00a0a great blessing for any Christian school that views these as opportunities to teach and grow students, along with their parents.\u00a0 Coaches are some of the most influential people that young people have in their lives.\u00a0 The life lessons from sports cannot be duplicated in most everyday situations.\u00a0 A Christian school&#8217;s athletic program can be a blessing to the overall school program and provide a wonderful resource for future student growth.\u00a0 There is too much at stake for an athletic program to be a thorn in the side.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s all take the necessary steps to have programs and teams that seek to honor student athletes and their families as well as represent Christ in a truly unique and amazing way!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;And you call yourselves Christian&#8230;&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0 &#8220;By the way your kids act &#8211;
