What a blast it was on Sept. 1-2\u00a0to take all our sixth graders,\u00a0several parents, and\u00a0Miss Fausett\u00a0on a 2-day retreat at Camp Tecumseh YMCA!\u00a0 I would like to tell you about what they experienced and the purpose for the trip.<\/p>\n

Foundations for Success\"\"<\/a><\/h2>\n

This Outdoor Education program, designed\u00a0for 6th – 8th\u00a0graders, provides instruction and first-hand experience in\u00a0certain character qualities:\u00a0 trust, communication, leadership, problem-solving, and self-confidence.\u00a0 Students learned good definitions of these qualities, learned some Biblical basis for them,\u00a0and put them to the test in real situations.\u00a0 The tests (or “trials”) had names like “Mission Possible,” “Optimist’s Challenge,” and “Survival Simulation.”\u00a0 These were challenging, and they\u00a0occasionally ended in failure of a sort.\u00a0 However, as we discussed with students in the debriefing session following each trial, huge lessons can be learned from failure.<\/p>\n

Lessons from Failure?<\/h2>\n

We could all probably tell stories of how much we learned in a situation when it did NOT go well.\u00a0 Whether they learned it quickly or over\u00a0a longer time, the 6th graders all saw that working together as a team to solve an unfamiliar problem can really push people beyond their “comfort zones.”\u00a0 Some students quickly\u00a0thought of\u00a0solutions, but had\u00a0difficulty communicating\u00a0them to others in a way the others\u00a0could understand\u00a0or\u00a0trust.\u00a0 Others tried to show leadership, but were not heeded by classmates.\u00a0 In one group, all the students focused on the most\u00a0interesting aspect of the problem while other aspects were neglected.\u00a0 Some groups worked really well together at first, then “hit a wall” when the success tapered off.\u00a0\u00a0Those that\u00a0paused to\u00a0determine where they were and where they needed\u00a0to go,\u00a0got back on track to success and learned a lot from the process.<\/p>\n

Purposes of\u00a0our\u00a0Trip<\/h2>\n

We were all interested in having an extreme amount of fun, and we were not disappointed!\u00a0 The “Black Hole” slide, skits, absolutely crazy songs, the night hike for the guys, staying in the cabins,\u00a0good food, and being with friends\u00a0all made easy work of that goal.<\/p>\n

Relationships<\/h3>\n

The students learned how to work better with others and support one another no matter what.\u00a0 Friendships were strengthened while also being stretched in a safe environment.\u00a0 Relationships were taken to a new level that will hopefully serve as a source of strength and encouragement all year long.<\/p>\n

Building Foundations<\/h3>\n

The qualities and friendships that were developed at Camp Tecumseh can benefit the students all year long and beyond.\u00a0 Here is what several students learned:<\/p>\n

“Everybody there was encouraging me.\u00a0 I didn’t make it to the top, but I was still happy that I got really close.\u00a0 I learned that when people encourage you, it helps you gain self-confidence.”<\/p>\n

“God is huge and awesome because of what we saw that night [looking at the stars on the night hike].\u00a0 If I was you, I would pay a million dollars to see it.”<\/p>\n

“I learned [while looking at the stars] that God overpasses awesomeness far more than I thought.”<\/p>\n

“I can do it when I try my hardest.”<\/p>\n

“You have to work as a team and not individuals when you are doing an activity or helping in life.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
