{"id":91,"date":"2011-09-07T14:49:35","date_gmt":"2011-09-07T18:49:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/faithkids.faithlafayette.org\/?p=91"},"modified":"2011-12-12T09:36:02","modified_gmt":"2011-12-12T14:36:02","slug":"maximizing-memory-part-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.faithlafayette.org\/faithkids\/maximizing-memory-part-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Maximizing Memory, Part 2: 4 Scripture Memory Games Kids Love"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Back in the day, I taught Bible clubs for several summers in Michigan.\u00a0 Occasionally, the following scenario would play out:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">CHILD.\u00a0 Teacher, can we play that game we played yesterday?<br \/>\nME. \u00a0What game?\u00a0 We didn&#8217;t play a game yesterday.<br \/>\nCHILD.\u00a0\u00a0You know, the _________ game!<br \/>\nME. \u00a0Oh! The game we played to review the memory verse!<\/p>\n<p>Have you ever had a child in your class enjoy your memory verse time so much that they wanted to keep playing the game you were using to learn the verse?\u00a0 It&#8217;s exciting when it happens.\u00a0\u00a0I wish I could claim credit for the times when it happened to me, but none of my verse games were original. \u00a0Others had taught them to me at the beginning of each summer.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re interested, these games can be yours for the low, low price of&#8230;nothing.<\/p>\n<h2>The Volume Game<\/h2>\n<p>To play this game, stick your arms out in front of you as if you were imitating a crocodile mouth chomping something.\u00a0 Your hands are the volume control.\u00a0 The closer your hands are to each other, the lower the volume level.\u00a0 When your hands are spread far apart, the volume level should be about 1,000 decibels!\u00a0 Have fun saying the verse with the kids this way, and then, if they\u2019re behaving well, let a few children be the volume control (you might need to instruct them not to go crazy with the volume so that no one can follow them).<\/p>\n<h2>The Broken Record Game<\/h2>\n<p>You\u2019ll first have to explain to the kids what a record was!\u00a0 Then hold out your left hand, palm up.\u00a0 Your palm is the center of the turntable.\u00a0 Next, move your right hand in circles around the turntable. When you drop the pointer finger of your right hand onto your palm, the \u201cneedle\u201d is \u201cstuck.\u201d\u00a0 Now say the verse.<\/p>\n<p>As long as the record is spinning (i.e., your right hand is circling the left), you say the verse normally, but as soon as your finger touches your palm, the class must repeat whatever word they were saying when the needle got stuck.\u00a0 The verse might sound like\u2026 \u201cFor God so loved-loved-loved-loved the world that He gave-gave-gave\u2026\u201d\u00a0 You get the idea.<\/p>\n<h2>The Clap-a-Word Game<\/h2>\n<p>Use some sort of visual to display the verse.\u00a0 After saying the verse as a group several times, have one volunteer(ed) child leave the room (or turn his back).\u00a0 Have another volunteer point to a word on the visual.\u00a0 Make sure everyone in the class sees the word that has been selected.\u00a0 The first volunteer then comes back into the classroom, but is not allowed to look at the visual.\u00a0 The class then says the verse, but claps on the selected word without saying it.\u00a0 The first volunteer must then guess which word was skipped.\u00a0 If he is stumped, you can allow him to look at the visual.\u00a0 Once the class has said the verse enough, cover the visual when the class says it.<\/p>\n<h2>The Jump-Up Game<\/h2>\n<p>Display the verse visually somehow.\u00a0 Have a child point to a word in the verse.\u00a0 Now point out every other word in the verse that starts with the same letter as the word the child pointed to.<\/p>\n<p>For example, if Bobby selects the word \u201cthe,\u201d then have the class note every word in the verse that starts with a \u201ct.\u201d\u00a0 As the class says the verse, every time they come to one of those words, they have to jump up from their chairs or from a crouching position on the floor.
