{"id":426,"date":"2012-01-31T15:30:13","date_gmt":"2012-01-31T20:30:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.faithlafayette.org\/faithkids\/?p=426"},"modified":"2014-07-22T11:08:51","modified_gmt":"2014-07-22T15:08:51","slug":"make-your-lessons-memorable-part-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.faithlafayette.org\/faithkids\/make-your-lessons-memorable-part-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Make Your Lessons Memorable &#8211; Part 2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">A Jewish father was expected to teach his children in ways that brought Scripture to bear on everyday life.\u00a0 He was to do this over and over throughout his children\u2019s time in his home.\u00a0 You should do the same.\u00a0 When you present your lesson, include one or two of the following teaching aids.\u00a0 These will help to keep student\u2019s attention and help them to remember the concepts you teach.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>Warm Affection<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u201cAffections are the more vigorous and practical exercises of the will and inclination of the will and the soul.\u201d\u2014Jonathan Edwards<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Affections are the emotions that move us to act.\u00a0 Affections can be good or bad.\u00a0 They can move us to sin or to act righteously.\u00a0 If we submit them to truths of God\u2019s Word, they can be a help we can utilize in teaching.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">The greatest preachers have understood this element.\u00a0 It is not manipulation; rather, it is allowing the truths of the Scripture to influence how we feel.\u00a0 There is an emotional element to excellent teaching. Sometimes we call it \u201cpassion.\u201d Consider these command words found in Scripture: love, rejoice, trust, and fear. These all have an emotional element.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">We will yell and scream at a ball game that has little eternal influence, but we routinely present our Bible lessons with almost no emotion.\u00a0 When part of a story in Scripture is sad, tell it that way.\u00a0 When a character in Scripture speaks, think about the emotion that he is speaking with and communicate it.\u00a0 The book of Psalms is filled with emotionally charged language.\u00a0 When you speak of heaven or of the goodness of God, it should be with tremendous joy.\u00a0 When you speak of hell or of God\u2019s wrath, do so with deep concern, gravity, and sadness.\u00a0 Use the emotions that correspond to the truths you are presenting.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>Animated Action<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Learning is a spiritual, cognitive, and physiological process.\u00a0 Studies show that people retain more information if a body movement is associated with it.\u00a0 When our brains are active and our blood is flowing, we learn better. This is especially true for children.\u00a0 This means that we need to utilize action in our teaching.\u00a0 We should be active in our movements and should ask the students to be active as they listen to the lessons.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Periodically have students sit up straight, take a deep breath, or stretch their arms.\u00a0 This gets their blood flowing and helps them to pay attention.\u00a0 Use hand motions, games, or other controlled movements during the lesson to help the students remember what they are learning.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">However, keep the movements minimal and controlled.\u00a0 It does not take much to get a student overly wound up.\u00a0 A common misconception is that students need to \u201cget their wiggles out.\u201d\u00a0 Rarely can a teacher get children really active, to \u201cget their wiggles out,\u201d and then be able to settle them down to listen to the lesson. Use activity, but use it carefully.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Children can learn truth, be active, and have fun.\u00a0 Make activity intentional.\u00a0 Keep it minimal and controlled.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>Magnetic Attention<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">You probably have heard the saying \u201cYou can lead a horse to water, but you can\u2019t make him drink.\u201d\u00a0 That may be true\u2014but you can salt his oats!\u00a0 You can create a thirst in your students, an attraction to what the Word of God has to say. There are several ways you can do this.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">Be enthusiastic.\u00a0 Act as though, and believe, that the day\u2019s lesson is the most important lesson the students ever have heard.\u00a0 Next week, do the same thing.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">Be God-infatuated.\u00a0 Let your love for His Word and His character permeate your lesson.\u00a0 <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">Vary the tone and intensity of your speech.\u00a0 <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">Be sincere about what you are teaching.\u00a0 We all have read articles or watched documentaries about topics we don\u2019t really care about.\u00a0 But if the writer or speaker was enthusiastic, we often read or listened anyway.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Incorporating these tips into your teaching should help you make your lessons something kids will remember!<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">&#8212;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">This post is excerpted from the teacher training material published by <em>Generations of Grace<\/em> as part of their line of Sunday School curriculum.\u00a0 \u00a9 2006<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Students can\u2019t apply what they don\u2019t remember.
