{"id":194,"date":"2011-10-17T10:22:46","date_gmt":"2011-10-17T14:22:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/faithkids.faithlafayette.org\/?p=194"},"modified":"2011-12-12T09:35:51","modified_gmt":"2011-12-12T14:35:51","slug":"teacher-tip-evaluation-can-help-you-grow","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.faithlafayette.org\/faithkids\/teacher-tip-evaluation-can-help-you-grow\/","title":{"rendered":"Teacher Tip:  Evaluation Can Help You Grow"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Report cards, final exams, check-ups at the doctor\u2019s office\u2014none of these probably evokes especially fond memories in your mind.\u00a0 For some, they may even conjure memories of panic or a pit-in-the-stomach feeling.\u00a0 And yet, all of these \u201cinstruments of torture\u201d are an engrained part of our society.\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 Because we know that human nature demands evaluation. \u00a0How much would children learn if they never had to face a quiz, test, or report card?\u00a0 How many adults would get on a treadmill if it weren\u2019t for the doctor\u2019s urging at their yearly physical?<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s face it.\u00a0 We get more done when someone is urging us forward.<\/p>\n<p>On a similar note, we often improve what we do when a second set of eyes points out things we would normally miss.\u00a0 That\u2019s one of the beauties of being a part of the body of Christ (1 Cor. 12). \u00a0It gives us access to invaluable advice from our brothers and sisters.<\/p>\n<p>So, what does all this mean for us as teachers?\u00a0 It means that we should be seeking outside input on where we can improve as teachers.\u00a0 What are some ways you can do this?<\/p>\n<p>Group Publishing\u2019s <em>Takeout Training for Teachers<\/em> by Keith Johnson offers four possible sources of input that you could tap:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Your Ministry Leader.\u00a0<\/strong>As terrifying as it might seem, you can ask a coordinator or director over you to come to your classroom and watch you teach. Then ask them to tell you one area you could improve and one area in which you are doing well.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Your Students.\u00a0<\/strong>Now, this one sounds REALLY scary, but you could give your students a short survey and ask them to rate you on a scale of 1-4 in areas like enthusiasm, making things interesting, caring about your students, making the Bible understandable, and so on.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Other Teachers.\u00a0<\/strong>Ask a fellow teacher to evaluate you. Have them tell you one thing to improve and one thing you\u2019re doing well.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Parents of Students.\u00a0<\/strong>Get feedback from parents on how they\u2019ve seen their child grow or change since being in your class.\u00a0 You could do this verbally, or through a note that you give parents to take home and fill out comments on.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Our natural response is to cringe at evaluation. Ignorance is bliss\u2014especially when we\u2019re full of pride. But Scripture says, \u201cFaithful are the wounds of a friend\u2026\u201d (Proverbs 27:6). Even if evaluation hurts, it\u2019s better to know and grow than to ignore and bore!<\/p>\n<p>Will you take the evaluation challenge?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Let\u2019s face it.
