{"id":1720,"date":"2014-01-21T10:44:29","date_gmt":"2014-01-21T15:44:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.faithlafayette.org\/faithkids\/?p=1720"},"modified":"2014-07-22T10:59:06","modified_gmt":"2014-07-22T14:59:06","slug":"shema-o-teachers-and-parents","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.faithlafayette.org\/faithkids\/shema-o-teachers-and-parents\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cShema, O Teachers and Parents\u2026\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cHear O Israel\u2026\u201d That\u2019s the way the famous \u201cShema\u201d passage begins in Deuteronomy 6:4.\u00a0 \u201cShema\u201d is the Hebrew word that means \u2018hear,\u2019 \u2018listen,\u2019 or \u2018obey.\u2019 So after Moses tells the people of Israel \u201cShema (<i>hear<\/i>),\u201d he then goes on to pen one of the most well know portions of Scripture:<\/p>\n<p><i>The Lord our God, the Lord is one. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart.\u00a0 \u2013 Deut. 6:4-6<\/i><\/p>\n<p>This passage has been one of the most important theological and doctrinal passages for believers since Christianity began, but more than that, these are significant verses revealing who God is and how we as His people are to relate to Him.\u00a0 This passage tells us that we are to love Him with all our heart, soul and might and to keep the words that He commanded us on our heart.\u00a0 But thankfully, God didn\u2019t <i>just<\/i> command that we love Him, He also <i>revealed<\/i> what it means to love Him<!--more--> with all of our heart, soul and might.\u00a0 In verse 7, it says,<\/p>\n<p><i>You shall <b>teach them diligently to your children<\/b>, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and whey you lie down, and when you rise.<\/i><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Teach Diligently O Teachers and Parents&#8230;<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cTeach them (God\u2019s words) diligently to your children.\u201d That is one of the ways we love the Lord with all our heart, soul and might. So, even though teaching children has its challenges as you routinely tell them to \u201cListen up (<i>shema<\/i>), please. Obey (<i>shema<\/i>), please,\u201d we need to remember that God has called out to us saying, \u201cShema (<i>listen up<\/i>), Greg. Shema (<i>obey<\/i>), Greg. Shema (<i>hear) <\/i>O Greg that the Lord is one\u2026love Me with all your heart, soul and might by teaching my children diligently about Me and My commands.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So, I pray that every time we prepare to teach the kids God has entrusted to Faith Church, and every time we teach our biological children, we would remember that the act of teaching them is in <span style=\"color: #000000\">itself <\/span>one of the ways we love the Lord our God with all our heart, soul and might.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Here are a few practical suggestions to help teach our children diligently:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Shema (<i>hear<\/i>) from the Lord every day by spending time in His Word.<\/li>\n<li>Read over the class curriculum and associated Bible passages multiple times before teaching a lesson.<\/li>\n<li>Talk about the lesson\/curriculum\/passage with others (v.7 \u2013 when you sit\u2026when you walk\u2026when you lie down\u2026when you rise).<\/li>\n<li>As a parent, visit the <a title=\"Faith Kids Connection\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.faithlafayette.org\/faithkids\/\" target=\"_blank\">Faith Kids Connection<\/a> for helpful follow-up on what your kids learned in Sunday School.<\/li>\n<li>Seek out teachers and parents who have been doing this well for years and ask for help.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cHear O Israel\u2026\u201d That\u2019s the way the famous \u201cShema\u201d passage begins in Deuteronomy 6:4.\u00a0 \u201cShema\u201d is the Hebrew word that means \u2018hear,\u2019 \u2018listen,\u2019 or \u2018obey.\u2019 So after Moses tells the people of Israel \u201cShema (hear),\u201d he then goes on to pen one of the most well know portions of Scripture: The Lord our God, the&#8230;
