{"id":128,"date":"2011-09-17T12:23:51","date_gmt":"2011-09-17T16:23:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/faithkids.faithlafayette.org\/?p=128"},"modified":"2011-12-12T09:36:02","modified_gmt":"2011-12-12T14:36:02","slug":"make-your-lessons-pop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.faithlafayette.org\/faithkids\/make-your-lessons-pop\/","title":{"rendered":"Make Your Lessons &#8220;Pop!&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>You absolutely must grab the attention of your students at the beginning of your Bible lesson.\u00a0 That&#8217;s imperative.\u00a0 If you don&#8217;t, you have already lost the battle for their attention.<\/p>\n<p>But how do you grab your students\u2019 attention?<\/p>\n<p>Try telling a personal story\u2014kids love hearing about what happens in your life.\u00a0 But start it out by asking mysteriously, \u201cDo you guys want to hear something really funny that happened to me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wait for a reaction.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Then say, \u201cDo you REALLY want to know?\u201d\u00a0 By now the kids should be intrigued. \u201cThen everyone needs to sit up and listen carefully\u2026\u201d\u00a0 Then start your story in an enthusiastic tone.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here&#8217;s my first teaching imperative:\u00a0 When you start your Bible lesson, if you don\u2019t grab your students\u2019 attention, you probably won\u2019t have much\u00a0success keeping it later in the lesson.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A good way to do this is to jump to the most exciting part of your story first!\u00a0 Instead of starting the story of Ruth by talking about Elimelech and sons, you could burst into your story by yelling, \u201cNaomi, Naomi!\u00a0 You\u2019ll never believe what Boaz said to me!\u201d\u00a0 Pause.\u00a0 Then transition, \u201cDo you want to know what Boaz said?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That reminds me of my first teaching imperative:\u00a0 <strong>Get your students\u2019 attention right off the bat!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Something you might try for this is to do something startling or out of the ordinary. Let\u2019s say you\u2019re teaching the story of Noah. You could start by suddenly breaking into Lamech\u2019s song in Genesis 4:23 where he brags about killing someone. Set it to some crazy tune, and if you have a terrible voice, that will only make the kids remember it more! They will never forget why God flooded the earth!<\/p>\n<p>My second teaching imperative is, <strong>\u201cChoose one major truth to drive home in many ways.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Did you get\u00a0that last one?\u00a0 If you didn\u2019t, you\u2019ll get it tomorrow. \u00a0Good luck making your lessons \u201cPOP!\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Grabbing your students&#8217; attention may be the most important step you take in teaching an effective lesson.
