{"id":945,"date":"2011-03-09T13:20:02","date_gmt":"2011-03-09T18:20:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.fbclafayette.org\/?p=945"},"modified":"2011-12-12T09:28:10","modified_gmt":"2011-12-12T14:28:10","slug":"5-books-every-christian-family-should-read-regularly","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.faithlafayette.org\/church\/5-books-every-christian-family-should-read-regularly\/","title":{"rendered":"5 books every Christian family should read regularly"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-979\" style=\"margin-left: 6px; margin-bottom: 6px;\" title=\"Books\" src=\"https:\/\/faith-blog-assets.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/20170523133744\/Books.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"133\" \/>Amazon offers thousands upon thousands of books for sale.\u00a0 You can get a hard copy, you can download them to your Kindle, or you can use a Kindle app to read them on your computer.\u00a0 Getting books is easier now than ever before.\u00a0 Most books are read once and then put on a shelf or given away.\u00a0 But what books actually stand the test of time?\u00a0 What books should every Christian family have and use regularly?\u00a0 Here are my top 5:<\/p>\n<p><em>Note:\u00a0 This list assumes that at least one parent and at least one child in the home.\u00a0 This list would change a bit for \u201cempty nesters\u201d or those without children.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>#1:\u00a0 The Bible<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Bible is first without question.\u00a0 People are often very quick to read books <em>about <\/em>the Bible or books that <em>use <\/em>the Bible, but let\u2019s face it&#8211;far too many people don\u2019t read the Bible itself.\u00a0 Let\u2019s not forget that God wrote a book.\u00a0 Let\u2019s not forget that God\u2019s book is a great story!\u00a0 Renew afresh each day your commitment to the Lord Jesus for all he has done for you.<\/p>\n<p><strong>#2:\u00a0 A Journal<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yes, a journal is my number 2 book.\u00a0 Why? Because some people read the Bible and do nothing about it.\u00a0 The Bible was meant to be lived, not merely read (James 1:22).\u00a0 A journal or notebook is kept near for the purpose of taking notes, writing applications, writing songs based on Scripture, or writing out prayers to God.\u00a0 In this journal you can reflect on Christ, the cross, the glories of heaven, your freedom to serve the living God, and to express thanks.\u00a0 You can also use it to record several ways that God\u2019s grace needs to impact your life each day.<\/p>\n<p><strong>#3:\u00a0 A Commentary<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I think we know that the Bible is basically about Jesus and his life, ministry, death, burial, resurrection, ascension, and promised return.\u00a0 But in what ways is the Bible about Jesus?\u00a0 That question is not as easy.\u00a0 So get a good commentary (or two or three) and read what the author says about the text.\u00a0 It may be that the author of the commentary has some insights you had not discovered or thought about before.\u00a0 A commentary is a great way to help you take a step of growth in your understanding of the Bible.<\/p>\n<p>Recommendations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Beginning level<\/strong>:\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B000K1C4U8\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=faithminis-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B000K1C4U8\">The Bible Knowledge Commentary<\/a>.\u00a0 This is a commentary on the entire Bible.\u00a0 This commentary is short (as commentaries go) and yet generally helpful.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Intermediate level<\/strong>:\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0310609038\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=faithminis-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0310609038\">The Expositor\u2019s Bible Commentary<\/a>.\u00a0 This is a 12 volume set.\u00a0 The information is much better and much more detailed.\u00a0 It is also more expensive and much larger.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Advanced level<\/strong>:\u00a0 Commentaries on individual books (The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0802836836\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=faithminis-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0802836836\">Pillar series<\/a> is one of my favorites).\u00a0 This option can be expensive and would require a lot more reading.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>#4:\u00a0 A book on marriage<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Your relationship and commitment to Jesus will find expression in your relationship with your spouse.\u00a0 If you don\u2019t love Jesus very much, it will be easy to be sinfully angry, impatient, bitter, unkind, and unloving to your spouse.\u00a0 If you don\u2019t love Jesus very much, you will think about how wonderful you are and how lucky and blessed your spouse is to have you.\u00a0 On the other hand, if you have been spending time at the foot of the cross, you will be willing to give grace because you have received so much.\u00a0 If you have been meditating on the importance of giving Jesus first place, you will respond with kindness when evil is shown, you will forgive even though you were hurt, you will not become bitter even if it seems you are not good enough.\u00a0 At the same time, a Bible-based book on marriage will give you some very practical ways you can seek to fulfill your responsibilities toward your spouse.<\/p>\n<p>Recommended: <em><a href=\"http:\/\/fbclafayette.org\/store\/description.php?II=9780875523859\">Strengthening Your Marriage<\/a><\/em> by Wayne Mack<\/p>\n<p><strong>#5:\u00a0 A book on parenting <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Once we have children, it is very easy to parent for all the wrong reasons.\u00a0 We might want to have well behaved children so people think highly of us;
