{"id":901,"date":"2011-03-04T10:00:09","date_gmt":"2011-03-04T15:00:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.fbclafayette.org\/?p=901"},"modified":"2011-12-12T09:28:13","modified_gmt":"2011-12-12T14:28:13","slug":"practical-fasting-tips","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.faithlafayette.org\/church\/practical-fasting-tips\/","title":{"rendered":"Practical Fasting Tips"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-904\" title=\"Fasting_Tips\" src=\"https:\/\/faith-blog-assets.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/20170523133746\/Fasting_Tips.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"113\" \/>Many may have never intentionally fasted before in their life.\u00a0 However, every night the body fasts from food and liquid for 7-10 hours.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The name \u201cbreakfast\u201d comes from the notion of \u201cbreaking the nightly fast.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 So, the body <strong><em>is<\/em><\/strong> accustomed to going without food for a longer period of time than a few hours.\u00a0 You are just unconscious during that time!\u00a0 So the conscious mind is not\u00a0accustomed to extended time without food and liquids.<\/p>\n<p>The goal of fasting is simply to humble oneself \u00a0before the Lord in childlike dependence to seek His face.\u00a0 When we fast with the right heart, we express that we love God and his plans more than we love food.\u00a0 Our stomachs are not our god.\u00a0 We are willing to subjugate our desire for food in efforts to seek Him.<\/p>\n<p>As Rob mentioned in his <a title=\"What is Fasting and Should We Be Fasting Today?\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.faithlafayette.org\/church\/what-is-fasting-and-should-we-be-fasting-today\/\">recent post<\/a>, there are no \u201crules\u201d for fasting, but the suggestions below are given for those who are new to this discipline.<!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Remember that you&#8217;ve been hungry before and survived!<\/li>\n<li>Generally, <strong>total abstinence from <em>food and liquid<\/em> is\u00a0<em>NOT<\/em> recommended<\/strong> since people are not accustomed to that practice.<\/li>\n<li>Try fasting from food but consume water and clear juices frequently (Note:\u00a0 orange juice and tomato juice are more acidic and are harder for the body as the sole liquid intake).<\/li>\n<li>Thoughts of food should prompt thoughts about God.<\/li>\n<li>Rather than distracting us, the hunger pains should serve as a reminder to pray and focus on our purpose.<\/li>\n<li>You can usually offset hunger pains\u00a0by drinking a large glass of water or juice;
