During this time there have been even more opportunities for teachable moments\u00a0with my kids.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>I recently\u00a0<\/span>needed to address<\/span>\u00a0one of my kids about self-control.\u00a0<\/span>Ironically,\u00a0<\/span>I had to practice a great amount of self-control while doing it. Isn\u2019t it interesting how the Lord can help you grow in an area as you help others grow in an area<\/span>?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I started by telling my child that I\u00a0wanted to talk with them about some behavior patterns\u2026namely\u00a0a lack of\u00a0self-control\u00a0my wife and\u00a0I had\u00a0been observing.\u00a0I also told them that at the same time I\u00a0was struggling with self-control,\u00a0and\u00a0I was\u00a0wanting to get angry.\u00a0I told them\u00a0that I loved them,\u00a0and that\u00a0I was seeking to speak the truth in love in a way that honored God and was helpful to them.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

IT WAS SO HARD.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I wanted to just say and do whatever I felt like,\u00a0as I had a lot of thoughts and feelings going on.\u00a0Being governed by something outside of yourself is hard. Not biting my nails or touching my face is hard\u2026processing your thoughts, body language,\u00a0and\u00a0facial expression through what you believe the Lord wants is harder.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Yet\u00a0He gives grace.\u00a0The Lord was working in my heart as I was struggling.\u00a0It was so\u00a0good for me to practice\u00a0self-control\u00a0as I taught about\u00a0self-control.\u00a0The Lord graciously gave me what I needed to grow. Through the struggle I had to\u00a0depend on\u00a0Him, to cry out to\u00a0Him\u00a0in prayer,\u00a0and\u00a0to think about His\u00a0Word above my\u00a0feelings. I had\u00a0to\u00a0grow\u00a0in\u00a0self-control\u00a0in real time\u00a0with my words\u00a0in order\u00a0to be edifying to my child.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Spirit was at work.\u00a0We both grew in\u00a0self-control because\u00a0the Spirit was bearing fruit in our lives.\u00a0As\u00a0I look back at the start\u00a0of the situation\u00a0it did not seem like God was at work, just that things were not going my way. But He was at work.\u00a0God is always at work.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How about you? Have there been any hard moments for you?\u00a0How is the Lord working in your life during this time? What is He producing even though it is hard?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Galatians 5:22\u201323 says,\u00a0\u201cthe fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,\u00a023\u00a0gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

We are called to obey our governing authorities. We are called to obey the commands of the Lord and\u00a0recognize\u00a0He is our\u00a0King.\u00a0We must\u00a0joyfully\u00a0do what He wants, because\u00a0He is\u00a0good,\u00a0and\u00a0we love and trust Him. But\u00a0it is\u00a0also\u00a0good to recognize that\u00a0the Spirit is at work. He is\u00a0bringing about things that are amazing and beautiful\u00a0through the hard moments.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I want to encourage you\u00a0to think about How the\u00a0Lord is at work in you during this time.\u00a0\u00a0As a parent or a child,\u00a0there may be many moments during this season that the Lord is seeking to teach you something, seeking\u00a0to produce something in you.\u00a0Usually that happens through\u00a0things\u00a0that are\u00a0hard, that go against your natural feelings\u00a0and\u00a0inclinations. It requires you to\u00a0recognize\u00a0that there is\u00a0Christ-centered\u00a0truth outside of you. That biblical truth is\u00a0to govern\u00a0you but\u00a0know that,\u00a0in addition,\u00a0the Holy Spirit is working inside of you\u00a0in your heart to produce something that is wonderful.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the hard times\u00a0of this season\u00a0let truth that is outside of you steer you, but also recognize\u00a0that\u00a0the Spirit is at work in you.\u00a0I wonder what sort of fruit He is going to produce in you today\u2026<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
