One of the things we are sure to face in our lifetime is adversity of some form or another.\u00a0 Currently many around the world are facing the adversity of COVID–<\/span>19 and the surrounding difficulties that come from restrictions on everyday life.\u00a0 However, once COVID<\/span>–<\/span>19 is gone and restrictions are lifted<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0there will be many more points of adversity that we will face.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One of the most incredible witnesses to the greatness of God is the faith that believers\u00a0are able to\u00a0demonstrate\u00a0in the midst of\u00a0adversity.\u00a0 It is our faith\u00a0in the midst of\u00a0adversity that proclaims loudly the surety that comes from\u00a0the Gospel.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2 Timothy 2:1\u201313\u00a0the Apostle Paul is encouraging his son in the faith, Timothy, to be strong and endure\u00a0in the midst of\u00a0the adversity that he is facing.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Let\u2019s listen in as Paul shares these words of encouragement<\/span> from 2 Timothy 2:1\u201313 (NASB95)\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

1<\/sup>\u00a0You\u00a0therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.\u00a02<\/sup>\u00a0The things which you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, entrust these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.\u00a03<\/sup>\u00a0Suffer hardship with\u00a0me,\u00a0as a good soldier of Christ Jesus.\u00a04<\/sup>\u00a0No soldier in active service entangles himself in the affairs of everyday life, so that he may please the one who enlisted him as a soldier.\u00a05<\/sup>\u00a0Also\u00a0if anyone competes as an athlete, he does not win the prize unless he competes according to the rules.\u00a06<\/sup>\u00a0The hard-working farmer ought to be the first to receive his share of the crops.\u00a07<\/sup>\u00a0Consider what I say, for the Lord will give you understanding in everything.\u00a08<\/sup>\u00a0Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, descendant of David, according to my gospel,\u00a09<\/sup>\u00a0for which I suffer hardship even to imprisonment as a criminal; but the word of God is not imprisoned.\u00a010<\/sup>\u00a0For this\u00a0reason\u00a0I endure all things for the sake of those who are chosen, so that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus\u00a0and\u00a0with\u00a0it\u00a0eternal glory.\u00a011<\/sup>\u00a0It is a trustworthy statement: For if we died with Him, we\u00a0will\u00a0also live with\u00a0Him;\u00a012<\/sup>\u00a0If we endure, we will also reign with Him; If we deny Him, He also will deny\u00a0us;\u00a013<\/sup>\u00a0If we are faithless, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Be Strong in the Grace that is in Christ Jesus!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

1<\/sup>\u00a0You\u00a0therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

The Apostle Paul starts off by telling Timothy to be strong.\u00a0 Notice, he is not to just be strong in his own strength. Rather he is commanded to be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The command to be strong is a present passive imperative.\u00a0 In other words, Timothy is being told to continue growing in power according to the work of God in his life.\u00a0 We see this same language appear in several common verses that are found in the Apostle Paul\u2019s writing.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. (Ephesians 6:10)<\/em><\/p>\n

I can do all things through Him who strengthens me. (Philippians 4:13)<\/em><\/p>\n

I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has strengthened me, because He considered me faithful, putting me into service… (1 Timothy 1:12)<\/em><\/p>\n

Your strength can never be founded in yourself and your own determination.\u00a0 It is possible you may endure on your own for a while, but the kind of strength that will last has to be found in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.\u00a0 Your greatest source of strength will always be anchored to the Gospel.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Four\u00a0Examples of the Strength the Grace of Jesus Will Provide!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

With the exhortation to be strong,\u00a0we are quickly provided with some examples of what it looks like to have that kind of strength.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Teacher<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

2<\/sup>\u00a0The things which you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, entrust these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

As you are enduring adversity, use it as an opportunity to teach others about the truths\u00a0you\u00a0have learned from the Word of the Lord.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As a young man in ministry, I was listening to the testimony of a man who was battling cancer.\u00a0 His\u00a0long-term\u00a0diagnosis was not looking good, and as he shared the report from his\u00a0doctor,\u00a0he took the time to teach me and the others who gathered there by sharing this simple truth that I have never forgotten.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He said, \u201cMy goal is not to beat cancer, my goal is to glorify God in the midst of my cancer.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Every single adversity you will face in your life provides an opportunity to teach those who are watching about the faith that comes from believing in the Gospel.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Soldier<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

3<\/sup>\u00a0Suffer hardship with\u00a0me,\u00a0as a good soldier of Christ Jesus.\u00a04<\/sup>\u00a0No soldier in active service entangles himself in the affairs of everyday life, so that he may please the one who enlisted him as a soldier.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

A soldier stays focused on the\u00a0purpose they are standing for\u00a0in the midst of\u00a0their fighting.\u00a0 They cannot begin to look around and be concerned about anything other than the situation right in front of them.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Why? \u201cThe soldier was concerned to obey his commander twenty-four hours a day, and Paul wanted Timothy to display the same zeal in commitment to the Lord.\u201d[1]<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Are you facing your adversity in the way that demonstrates that you will obey your commander no matter what He has asked you to do?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Athlete<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

5<\/sup>\u00a0Also\u00a0if anyone competes as an athlete, he does not win the prize unless he competes according to the rules.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Athletes\u00a0have to\u00a0be disciplined in order to be successful.\u00a0 They are training every day to push themselves as far as possible\u00a0in order to\u00a0be successful\u00a0in the midst of\u00a0their competition (adversity).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the same way,\u00a0the Christian must build their self-discipline\u00a0in order to\u00a0be prepared for the adversity that they will face.\u00a0 We must build our endurance by training our hearts and minds to focus on the truths of God\u2019s Word, so\u00a0that\u00a0when we face\u00a0adversity,\u00a0we are ready to respond according to our training.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Farmer<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

6<\/sup>\u00a0The hard-working farmer ought to be the first to receive his share of the crops.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

A farmer works hard all year long for the promise of the reward of his crops.\u00a0 In the same way,\u00a0we endure during our adversity for the promise of our eternal reward.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As you face your adversity, remember the ultimate reward will never be found here on earth but rather in eternity.\u00a0 As you hold loosely to the things of this earth and focus on the eternal, your perspective to face adversity will be strengthened.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Three Reasons You Can Endure!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

7<\/sup>\u00a0Consider what I say, for the Lord will give you understanding in everything.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

The Gospel of Jesus Christ!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

8<\/sup>\u00a0Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, descendant of David, according to my gospel,\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

We just celebrated Easter.\u00a0 This is literally the greatest source of strength\u00a0in the midst of\u00a0adversity.\u00a0 Christ came to earth.\u00a0 He lived a perfect life.\u00a0 He suffered, bled, and died for your sin.\u00a0 However, the bondage of death could not hold Him as He rose from the dead.\u00a0 With His resurrection He has provided eternal life to all who will believe.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If the Gospel\u00a0is true (and it is), there is no adversity that can ultimately win in your life.\u00a0 You have eternal life.\u00a0\u00a0So,\u00a0face your adversity with confidence in the finished work of Christ on the cross.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Your Testimony\u00a0<\/span>in the Midst of<\/span>\u00a0Adversity Will Point Others to the Gospel!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

\u00a0<\/strong>9<\/sup>\u00a0for which I suffer hardship even to imprisonment as a criminal; but the word of God is not imprisoned.\u00a010<\/sup>\u00a0For this\u00a0reason\u00a0I endure all things for the sake of those who are chosen, so that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus\u00a0and\u00a0with\u00a0it\u00a0eternal glory.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Face adversity in a way that will point others to the wonderful Gospel and the promises it has for you.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Your Reward Awaits You!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

11<\/sup>\u00a0It is a trustworthy statement: For if we died with Him, we\u00a0will\u00a0also live with\u00a0Him;\u00a012<\/sup>\u00a0If we endure, we will also reign with Him; If we deny Him, He also will deny\u00a0us;\u00a013<\/sup>\u00a0If we are faithless, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cIf we die with Him, we will also live with Him.\u201d\u00a0 If the adversity you are enduring causes you to die, it is not in vain for you will live with Him.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIf we endure, we will also reign with Him.\u201d The end of the story is already written, and Christ will reign.\u00a0 So, endure your adversity knowing one day you will reign with Him.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIf we deny Him, He will also deny us.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0In the midst of\u00a0adversity our faith is revealed.\u00a0 If our faith is not in the Lord, then it is revealed that we are not truly in the faith.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIf we are faithless, He remains faithful.\u201d Even when our faith falters, God will stay true to His promises.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We can face the adversities\u00a0of\u00a0our life when we depend on the grace and the strength we find in Gospel of Jesus Christ!\u00a0 So\u00a0be\u00a0strong in the\u00a0grace of Jesus Christ!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
