{"id":7904,"date":"2020-03-27T16:19:54","date_gmt":"2020-03-27T20:19:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.faithlafayette.org\/church\/?p=7904"},"modified":"2020-03-30T09:42:31","modified_gmt":"2020-03-30T13:42:31","slug":"the-lord-reigns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.faithlafayette.org\/church\/the-lord-reigns\/","title":{"rendered":"The Lord Reigns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When my mom passed away\u00a0<span data-contrast=\"auto\">in 2019, my sister and I had the task of sifting through\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">all<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0her material possession<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and, nowadays, her various computer accounts to close them down.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Mom had<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0kept a list of her passwords and the one that I saw the most was \u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Loismsh<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u201d I racked my brain thinking about who mom\u00a0knew\u00a0named \u201cLois\u201d and\u00a0the meaning of\u00a0\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">msh<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u201d Eventually, I remembered\u00a0that mom\u2019s password was her favorite scripture,\u00a0Psalm 23, \u201cthe \u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><strong>LO<\/strong><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">rd<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0\u00a0IS\u00a0My\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><strong>SH<\/strong><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">epherd<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Favorite Scriptures Among Christians<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>If a Christian has a favorite bible passage, often that passage is likely to come from the book of Psalms. The reason that Psalms has risen to the top of the list is not hard to understand.\u00a0<span data-contrast=\"auto\">T<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">he collection of Psalms\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">does not\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">provide truth<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0bombs\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">detached from\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">life. Instead, the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Psalms vividly capture<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the heart of a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">follower of God<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0struggling to believe truth in excruciating times.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0In this way, t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">he Psalms become an example of God\u2019s people<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2019s prayers and praises<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0through trials<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Not Only a \u201cSong\u201d Book\u00a0but a Guidebook<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Many\u00a0<span data-contrast=\"auto\">think<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0that the book of Psalm<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0is a collection of random poems loosely organized without an overarching coherent message. However, the more one\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">studies the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0collection of Psalms, the more\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a beautiful unified message emerges<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>P<span data-contrast=\"auto\">erhaps\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">you\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">have noticed that the Psalms end\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">with a crescendo of five Psalms praising God (Psalm 146<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">-150). However, there is much\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">sorrow (<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">lament<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">) expressed<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0between Psalm 3 and Psalm 146.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Before God\u2019s people have the ultimate experience of basking in the glory of God<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and having unbridled praise,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">there is much hardship to go through.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Psalm<span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a01 and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">2,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the introduction to collection, instruct the reader to meditate day and night on God\u2019s word and remain firmly connected to God\u2019s chosen King (the anointed one, the messiah)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. In this way, the believer<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0remain<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">firm<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0(Psalm 1:3)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0in the midst of the struggle of faith to arrive at the glorious end.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For a more detailed and plausible understanding of the structure of the Psalms watch\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=j9phNEaPrv8\"><span data-ccp-charstyle=\"Hyperlink\" data-wac-het=\"1\">this video:<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Overview: Psalms\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/j9phNEaPrv8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Needed for Today<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Perhaps the most relevant sequence of Psalms provid<span data-contrast=\"auto\">ing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0hope and perspective in our current uncertain times is Psalms 90-106.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This collection is primarily about how God reigns over all. This collection had been organized to proclaim that the Lord reigns even when all that the people had been trusting in had seemingly faltered. That period was known as the exile of Israel. The\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">people had to be reminded that th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">r<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ough their difficulty the Lord\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">was<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0reigning and in firm control<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Psalms\u00a0<span data-contrast=\"auto\">99:1\u20133 declares,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">The\u00a0<span data-contrast=\"auto\">Lord<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0reigns,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0let the peoples tremble;<br \/>\n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">He is enthroned\u00a0above\u00a0the cherubim, let the earth shake!<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\" data-wac-het=\"1\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The\u00a0Lord\u00a0is great in Zion,<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\" data-wac-het=\"1\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">And He is exalted above all the peoples.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\" data-wac-het=\"1\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Let them praise Your great and awesome name;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\" data-wac-het=\"1\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Holy is He.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Feed Your Faith, Not your Fear<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>During these uncertain times, r<span data-contrast=\"auto\">ead one Psalm per day starting at Psalm 90 and going through Psalm 106.
