One of my greatest struggles in life is my\u00a0natural propensity to worry.\u00a0 I mean it is so easy to naturally turn to worry\u00a0<\/span>during<\/span>\u00a0any situation.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Will this airplane actually make it to our destination?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Will that semi\u00a0driver\u00a0see me if I try to pass\u00a0him on the interstate?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Is 10 mph too fast to drive on this half an inch of snow?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Is that noise my kid is making a cough or are they gasping for air?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What do you mean there is a virus that is going to cause my family to have to hide in our house for an extended period of time?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Did someone just sneeze?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Does the Bible have anything to say about worry?<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

In the Bible there\u00a0is\u00a0a group of words that mean the same thing as worry.\u00a0 These words literally mean to have a divided mind.\u00a0 We read these words in our Bible as worry, anxiety, or cares.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In other words, we are so concerned about something that our minds are divided.\u00a0 We are unsettled in our thinking about it.\u00a0 We are conflicted on what to even think about\u00a0the situation that we are enduring.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Another word that follows along closely with worry is the word fear.\u00a0 Fear means a powerful and habitual focus on a perceived danger that prevents us from properly loving God and others.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Before we get\u00a0too\u00a0far,\u00a0I want you to notice that there are several different reasons that people have fear or worry.\u00a0 Some of these fears and worries come from legitimate times of hardship.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It is in these moments or opportunities that our worship is often revealed.\u00a0 Is our hope in Christ or in something else?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And while we may struggle to focus on the goodness of God in the middle of these hardships,\u00a0we can trust fully in the promises of God.\u00a0 Like any other temptation,\u00a0fear or worry tries to lead us away from our solid anchor in the promises of God.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What does 1 Peter 5:6-7\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>teach us?<\/span>\u00a0<\/em><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

1 Peter 5:6\u20137 Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time, casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.\u00a0<\/em><\/span>\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

These verses are incredibly important\u00a0for\u00a0us to understand what God\u2019s Word has to say about worry, anxiety, cares, or fear.\u00a0 So, let\u2019s take these verses apart to better understand what God is trying to teach us.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Our verses start with the word “therefore.”\u00a0 One of the rules of Bible reading is that whenever you come across the word “therefore,” you should pause and see what it is there for.\u00a0\u00a0If we look at the context of this passage, we see a quote in 1 Peter 5:5 that leads right into our chosen passage. \u201c…God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Taking our worries to God requires humility.<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Since God is opposed to the proud, we should humble ourselves under the mighty hand of God.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Our worry ultimately is founded in our own pride.\u00a0 We somehow believe the lie that we have any form of control over what is happening around us.\u00a0\u00a0In our pride we worry as if we can change anything.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What good is done by\u00a0restlessly lying in bed\u00a0as you look up the symptoms that you are experiencing or even worry about the diagnosis you were recently given?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
