{"id":437,"date":"2011-01-12T20:12:32","date_gmt":"2011-01-13T01:12:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.fbclafayette.org\/?p=437"},"modified":"2011-12-12T09:28:45","modified_gmt":"2011-12-12T14:28:45","slug":"family-holiday-hangover","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.faithlafayette.org\/church\/family-holiday-hangover\/","title":{"rendered":"Family Holiday Hangover?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-442\" style=\"margin-left: 6px; margin-bottom: 6px;\" title=\"Conflict\" src=\"https:\/\/faith-blog-assets.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/20170523133757\/Conflict.jpg\" alt=\"Couple fighting\" width=\"150\" height=\"220\" \/>Wikipedia describes a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hangover\">hangover<\/a> as \u201cthe sum of unpleasant physiological effects following heavy consumption of alcoholic beverages.\u201d\u00a0 Maybe you and your family are suffering from a holiday hangover without ever having imbibed some spiked holiday eggnog!\u00a0 See if your family has a holiday hangover based upon the following symptoms.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do family members have headaches from members grumbling about resuming responsibilities?<\/li>\n<li>Are family members nauseated over conflicts about how much Wii time each person gets?<\/li>\n<li>Are family members lethargic and hard to get out of bed in the morning?<\/li>\n<li>Are family members sensitive to the\u00a0noise of loud arguments?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A family holiday hangover could be described as \u201cthe sum of unpleasant physiological effects following\u00a0<strong><em>heavy consumption period<\/em><\/strong>.\u201d<!--more-->\u00a0\u00a0 By this I mean, we can easily slip into modes of heavy consumption indicating our self-absorption over the holidays.\u00a0 We get focused on gifts, goodies, games, and the glamour of the holidays.\u00a0 Before long we expect all of life to be about entertaining me.\u00a0 The holidays have \u201chung-over\u201d into day to day life.<\/p>\n<p>Why is it that vacation and holidays are so hyped up but often fail to live up to the hype?\u00a0 If your family is like mine, my natural tendency is to view holidays and vacations as the time to think about me!\u00a0 Every individual in the family is thinking \u201cthis is my time to think about me.\u201d\u00a0 No wonder there are problems (James 3:16)!\u00a0 And if this attitude is left unchecked the effects hang over into the New Year.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s the cure for a family holiday hangover?\u00a0 Sobering up!\u00a0 Below are the steps.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Thank the Lord for all the good times experienced over the holidays.<\/li>\n<li>Have a family chat about God\u2019s purpose for each family member\u2014to love God and others, not myself.<\/li>\n<li>Re-establish helpful routines of work, play, sleep, and school.<\/li>\n<li>Return to faithful involvement in church body life (worship, <a href=\"http:\/\/www1.faithlafayette.org\/church\/ministries\/adult_ministries\/adult_bible_fellowships\/\">fellowship<\/a>,\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www1.faithlafayette.org\/church\/Get_Involved\/serving\/\">service<\/a>, and Bible study)<\/li>\n<li>Today seek to focus on somebody else rather than yourself.<\/li>\n<li>Take small steps today to accomplish your goals for this year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Let\u2019s all have a sober New Year and, in more ways than one, avoid any hangovers! \u00a0I&#8217;d love to hear comments about helpful ways you and your family are getting over the hangover.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Wikipedia describes a\u00a0hangover as \u201cthe sum of unpleasant physiological effects following heavy consumption of alcoholic beverages.\u201d\u00a0 Maybe you and your family are suffering from a holiday hangover without ever having imbibed some spiked holiday eggnog!\u00a0 See if your family has a holiday hangover based upon the following symptoms.
