{"id":4058,"date":"2013-01-21T16:37:29","date_gmt":"2013-01-21T21:37:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.faithlafayette.org\/church\/?p=4058"},"modified":"2014-07-21T10:10:14","modified_gmt":"2014-07-21T14:10:14","slug":"saying-no-to-god","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.faithlafayette.org\/church\/saying-no-to-god\/","title":{"rendered":"Saying &#8220;No&#8221; to God"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong><span style=\"color: #000000\">The President Didn&#8217;t<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">A story is told of Thomas Jefferson that during his days as president, he and a group of companions were traveling across the country on horseback. \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">They came to a river which had left its banks because of a recent downpour.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">The swollen river had washed the bridge away. \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">Each rider was forced to ford the river on horseback, fighting for his life against the rapid currents. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">The very real possibility of death threatened each rider, which caused a traveler who was not part of their group to step aside and watch.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">After several had plunged in and made it to the other side, the stranger asked President Jefferson if he would ferry him across the river.\u00a0 The president agreed without hesitation.\u00a0 The man climbed on, and shortly thereafter the two of them made it safely to the other side.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">As the stranger slid off the back of the saddle onto dry ground, one in the group asked him, \u201cTell me, why did you select the president to ask this favor of?\u201d <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">The man was shocked, admitting he had no idea it was the president who had helped him. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u201cAll I know,\u201d he said, \u201cIs that on some of your faces was written the answer \u2018No,\u2019 and on some of them was the answer \u2018yes.\u2019 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">His was a \u2018Yes\u2019 face.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Two Kinds of People<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">I like this story because it speaks about two major categories of people in this world:\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u201cYes\u201d people and \u201cNo\u201d people. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0<!--more--><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">Some people look at life without becoming daunted by challenges and obstacles. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">That doesn\u2019t mean they don\u2019t acknowledge the existence of problems, but instead of allowing problems to overwhelm them, they become energized by the opportunities they see. \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">They\u2019re able to identify needs and embrace the possibility of meeting those needs.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">These are the \u201cYes\u201d people.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Others recognize the opportunities that exist, but instead of finding excitement in the chance to provide solutions to problems, they focus on the challenges, the obstacles, and the reasons why meeting a particular need would simply be too difficult.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">These are the \u201cNo\u201d people.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Three Questions<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000\">1. What kind of person are you? \u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000\">Are you the kind of person who sees needs and looks for ways to creatively meet them? <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">Or are you the kind of person who sees those same needs and says, \u201cSolving that problem would just be too tough.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>2. Do you believe in the sovereignty of God? \u00a0<\/strong>Do you believe that everything that enters our lives\u2014whether pleasant or unpleasant\u2014does so at the direction of our good and loving Creator?\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Most Bible believing Christians would answer that question with an unreserved \u201cYes.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">But I wonder if we understand the implications of that answer.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">If God is sovereign, then nothing happens by accident.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">It\u2019s not a mistake or a coincidence when we learn of a need.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">God intends for us to think about the needs we encounter and to prayerfully consider the ways in which we might play a part in meeting those needs.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">There\u2019s a very real sense in which our response to these needs is a direct response to the God who placed them before us.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">Often times, saying \u201cYes\u201d to the need means saying \u201cYes\u201d to God. And just as often, saying \u201cNo\u201d to the need of means saying \u201cNo\u201d to God.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000\">3. What would your life be like if God responded to your needs in the same way that you respond to the needs of others?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000\">For many of us, the results would be devastating.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">Most of us would be hungry and homeless, without any hope for this life or for the life to come.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">God&#8217;s Response to Us<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">A couple of weeks ago, Pastor Viars spoke to our church family about his concern that far too many Christians have gotten into the habit of saying \u201cNo\u201d to God.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">That\u2019s a significant concern because God, so often, says \u201cYes\u201d to us.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">When you recognized your need for a Savior, did the Lord turn you away, or did He offer you His Son?\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">When you needed forgiveness for that sin you&#8217;ve committed way to many times, did the Lord reject you, or did He offer you cleansing yet again?<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">When you needed direction and purpose for your life, did God ignore your pleas, or did He provide you with the truth of His Word?<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">To these and a thousand other needs in your life, God has answered, \u201cYes, yes, a million times yes.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">If we are going to be the kind of people whose lives are characterized by gratitude and appreciation for the love, mercy, and blessing of God&#8230;if we&#8217;re going to be the kind of people who value the opportunities God places in our lives to become more like our Savior&#8230;if we&#8217;re going to be the kind of people in whom the Lord delights&#8230;if we&#8217;re going to be the kind of people that is able to give a good account at the judgment seat of Christ, then we need to begin looking for ways to say &#8220;Yes&#8221; to God.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">While it would be impossible to address every need, I believe God wants us to respond to a far greater number of needs than most of us presently do.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">I believe that we should view every need that comes across our path as a divine appointment from God.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">A Timely Opportunity<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">As I was composing this blog post, our church received a call from another church group whose bus had broken down on I-65 a couple of miles away from Faith.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">It was 15 degrees outside, and they were trying to figure out how their group of 31 people would make it to its destination in Kentucky.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">I already had a lot on my plate for the day.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">I came in to work with an agenda of my own and a number of additional responsibilities were added to that agenda once I arrived.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">I wasn\u2019t looking for an additional task, but the Lord presented me with a need.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">To be perfectly honest, I didn\u2019t want to say \u201cYes.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">I wanted to find some excuse to say \u201cNo\u201d so that I could finish up this post and move on to the next item on my agenda.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">I had to decide if I really believed what I was writing\u2026if I really believed that God was Sovereign\u2026if I was truly interested in becoming more like my Savior\u2026if I actually cared about the fact that God had graciously met my needs.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Despite my reluctance to be used by Him and my tendency to focus on obstacles, the Lord helped me to say \u201cYes.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">And I\u2019m so glad that He did.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">I was able to pick up their bus driver from the interstate, bring him back to our church, and lend their group the use of one of our buses while their bus received repairs.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">This allowed these dear brothers and sisters in Christ to get back to the ministry purpose for which they were traveling.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">This opportunity reminded me that saying \u201cYes\u201d isn\u2019t easy.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">It takes effort.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">It\u2019s much easier to say \u201cNo;\u201d and there may be a number of seemingly good reasons for doing so.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">However, when we say \u201cNo\u201d to such opportunities without soberly and prayerfully considering our answer, we forfeit both the grace and growth that could have been ours.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">What About You?<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Have you been approached about a service opportunity recently?\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">Have you learned of a need within your church? <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">Your community?<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">Your neighborhood?<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">Have you thoughtfully considered how the Lord might want to use you in meeting that need?<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">The Lord is looking for people who will say, \u201cYes.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">You can count on Him.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0
