{"id":3881,"date":"2012-11-20T12:30:29","date_gmt":"2012-11-20T17:30:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.faithlafayette.org\/church\/?p=3881"},"modified":"2014-07-21T10:10:55","modified_gmt":"2014-07-21T14:10:55","slug":"weddings-thanksgiving-and-leprosy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.faithlafayette.org\/church\/weddings-thanksgiving-and-leprosy\/","title":{"rendered":"Weddings, Thanksgiving, and Leprosy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ever been to a really nice wedding?\u00a0 I&#8217;m talking about an extraordinarily nice wedding?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A few years back, my wife Deb spent a summer working in Newport, Rhode Island at Beechwood, the summer home once occupied by the family of John Jacob Astor, one of the 19th century&#8217;s wealthiest men.\u00a0 Beechwood now exists as a living history museum, and\u00a0on weekends, the mansion is frequently rented as a site for weddings.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Details, details<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Deb has shared some incredible stories about the weddings she witnessed there.\u00a0 Some families would spend upwards of $80,000-100,000 on these events.\u00a0 You can image what they were like:\u00a0 the flowers, the music, the food, the clothing&#8211;all first class.<!--more--><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">With all of the many details cared for by professional event planners, you might think that the wedding couples were freed up to focus on the significance of the commitment they were making and the life they were about to begin with one another.\u00a0 And you would be wrong.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Deb says these couples were some of the most stressed-out people she&#8217;s ever seen.\u00a0 Obsessing over dresses, caterers, decorations, and the like, the bride and groom&#8217;s attention seemed to be on any and everything but the commitment.\u00a0 The reason for the event was lost in auxiliary details that had nothing to do with the joining of two lives.\u00a0 What a shame.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>The Three F&#8217;s<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But weddings aren&#8217;t the only things that can become like that.\u00a0 That can happen to almost any event\u00a0intended for a significant purpose.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The holidays are a great example.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This week, we&#8217;re celebrating Thanksgiving.\u00a0 And if we&#8217;re not careful, our celebration can become all about family, food, and football.\u00a0 Please don&#8217;t misunderstand&#8211;I&#8217;m not saying that any of those things are bad.\u00a0 (I happen to enjoy all three, and I plan to devote time to each of them this Thursday.)\u00a0 But if that&#8217;s where we focus first, we&#8217;ve missed it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>The 9 and the 1<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In Luke 17, we read the story of ten lepers who asked Jesus to heal them.\u00a0 Jesus instructed them to show themselves to the priests, and on the way, the men discovered that they had been healed.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Luke 17:14-19<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> And as they were going, they were cleansed. <sup>15 <\/sup>Now one of them, when he saw that he had been healed, turned back, glorifying God with a loud voice, <sup>16 <\/sup>and he fell on his face at His feet, giving thanks to Him. And he was a Samaritan. <sup>17 <\/sup>Then Jesus answered and said, \u201cWere there not ten cleansed? But the nine\u2014where are they? <sup>18 <\/sup>Was no one found who returned to give glory to God, except this foreigner?\u201d <sup>19 <\/sup>And He said to him, \u201cStand up and go; your faith has made you well.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">While all ten\u00a0lepers received physical healing, nine of them missed the point.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0I&#8217;m sure it must have been thrilling to discover freedom from a life of disease, but they missed the fact that they had just encountered the Creator and King of the universe, the One who could free them from a\u00a0life of sin.\u00a0 They were focused on the blessing instead of the Person behind it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Only one returned to Jesus.\u00a0 He was filled with gratitude&#8211;not just for the gift but for the Giver of the gift.\u00a0 And he was made well in a much deeper way.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>The Point<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Faith grows in the soil of thankfulness.\u00a0 <\/strong>It\u2019s only when we recognize God as our gracious provider that we understand our need for God and begin to express faith in Him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This\u00a0Thanksgiving, as we&#8217;re preparing to enjoy the many blessings in our lives, let&#8217;s not lose sight of the One who has blessed us.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s be like the man who returned and give appropriate praise to our God.\u00a0 Purposeful gratitude will deepen both our enjoyment of the holiday as well as our faith.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This week, we&#8217;re celebrating Thanksgiving.
