{"id":3865,"date":"2012-11-19T14:48:48","date_gmt":"2012-11-19T19:48:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.faithlafayette.org\/church\/?p=3865"},"modified":"2014-07-21T10:10:59","modified_gmt":"2014-07-21T14:10:59","slug":"three-reasons-why-thanksgiving-might-be-less-than-biblical","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.faithlafayette.org\/church\/three-reasons-why-thanksgiving-might-be-less-than-biblical\/","title":{"rendered":"Go Beyond Giving Thanks This Thanksgiving"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We think a lot about \u201cgiving thanks\u201d this time of year.<\/p>\n<p>But <strong><em>did you know that the Israelites of the Old Testament had no word for \u201cthanks\u201d in their language? <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a word that gets translated \u201cthanks\u201d in our Bibles, but that word is never used between two people\u2014only between a person and God.<\/p>\n<p>Now, before you think I\u2019m arguing that we should do away with Thanksgiving, Tom Turkey, and grandma\u2019s cranberry relish altogether just because the Old Testament doesn\u2019t have a word for \u201cthanks,\u201d you should know that the Old Testament <em>does <\/em>have a word for <em>PRAISE<\/em>. Did you know that the biblical concept of PRAISE is slightly different from our concept of THANKS?<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Somebody much smarter than I came up with these<a title=\"\" href=\"\/Users\/jvegter\/AppData\/Local\/Microsoft\/Windows\/Temporary%20Internet%20Files\/Content.Outlook\/AENADKF7\/3%20REASONS%20WHY%20THANKSGIVING%20MIGHT%20BE%20LESS%20THAN%20BIBLICAL%20(2).docx#_ftn1\">[1]<\/a> <strong><em>3 differences between THANKS and PRAISE<\/em><\/strong>, but here are some things to chew on with your turkey this Thanksgiving:<\/p>\n<h2>Praise Lifts Up The One Being Praised<\/h2>\n<p>If I thank you for passing the salt and pepper at the Thanksgiving smorgasbord, I haven\u2019t really done anything <em>to<\/em> you. But I said, \u201cO great passer of the condiments, you are supreme at passing!\u201d\u2014well, I just made a value statement about <em>YOU.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Praise Is Not Forced<\/h2>\n<p>Giving thanks can be a polite duty\u2014\u201cNow, say thank you, Bobby.\u201d But praise\u2014well, that\u2019s something that comes from the heart: \u201cYou are just wonderful! Did you know that?\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Praise Occurs In A Group<\/h2>\n<p>When praise happens in the Psalms, it frequently shows up in a group setting: \u201cI will tell of your name <em>to my brothers<\/em>;\u00a0<em>in the midst of the congregation<\/em> I will praise you\u201d (Ps. 22:22). I can say thank you privately, but biblical praise usually involves lifting someone up publicly together.<\/p>\n<p>So, this Thanksgiving, thank God for His many gifts. But go a step further. Dare to <strong>lift up<\/strong> God <strong>from your heart<\/strong> in the <strong>presence of others. <\/strong>That is the essence of praise!<\/p>\n<p><em>Praise the LORD!<br \/>\nPraise, O servants of the LORD,<br \/>\nPraise the name of the LORD!
