{"id":2306,"date":"2011-09-08T11:38:56","date_gmt":"2011-09-08T15:38:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.fbclafayette.org\/?p=2306"},"modified":"2014-07-21T10:16:33","modified_gmt":"2014-07-21T14:16:33","slug":"bible-background-the-temple","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.faithlafayette.org\/church\/bible-background-the-temple\/","title":{"rendered":"Bible Background: The Temple"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">This\u00a0site was said to be the dwelling place of the Lord Himself.\u00a0 It was supposed to have been a house of prayer, the holiest site on earth.\u00a0 Instead, it had become a profit-center for merchants, swindlers,\u00a0and thieves.\u00a0 It was also the scene of one of Jesus&#8217; most controversial and misunderstood acts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Throughout the gospels, we read about a special place that played a significant role in the land of Palestine during the first century.\u00a0 This place influenced the culture in which Christ ministered, and He tailored His message to reach and respond to the people who met here.\u00a0 Learning more about this place can add greater detail and deeper understanding to our study of the gospels.\u00a0 What follows is a thumbnail sketch of <em><strong>the Temple<\/strong><\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><!--more--><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000\">Historical Development (After 200 BC)<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">When the Israelites returned from exile, they reconstructed what would come to be known as Zerubbabel\u2019s Temple.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">Zerubbabel\u2019s Temple often served as stronghold during times of dispute among various warring parties in the first and second centuries B.C.\u00a0 As a result, the Temple sustained significant damage.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">In response to complaints that the Temple was a shadow of its former glory, Herod ordered the reconstruction of the Temple in 20-19 B.C.\u00a0 The rebuilt Temple was intended to serve as an eternal monument\u00a0to him.\u00a0 <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">With the exception of adorning features, which continued to be added for many decades, construction of Herod\u2019s Temple was completed by 10 B.C.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">Herod\u2019s Temple was renowned for its beauty throughout the Roman world.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">Some rejected the Temple that existed during the time of Christ, arguing that it had not been built to the specifications provided by God for the construction of Solomon\u2019s\u00a0Temple.\u00a0 <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">Herod\u2019s Temple was destroyed by fire in an assault by the Roman general Titus in 70 A.D.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Century Gothic\">\u00a0<\/span>Function and Importance in the Time of Christ<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">The Temple was considered to be the dwelling place of God.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">The Temple was regarded as a sign of\u00a0Israel&#8217;s stauts\u00a0as God&#8217;s chosen people.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">The social, economic, and political life of first-century Jerusalem was intricately linked to the practice and function of the Temple.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">The Temple served as an enormous consumer of the goods and services provided by the merchants and tradesmen of the city.\u00a0 Among the trades dependant upon the Temple&#8217;s operation were the woold baking, olive oil, pottery, butchery, construction, and stone cutting industries.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">Each strata of Jerusalem&#8217;s class system was associated with the activity of the Temple in some fashion.\u00a0 <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">To some degree, all citizens of Jerusalem were dependent upon Temple revenues for their livelihood.\u00a0 <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">One third of Jerusalem&#8217;s population was comprised of religious functionaries whose subsistence was tied to the existence and function of the Temple.\u00a0 Among these were the high priest, numerous chief priests, 7200 ordinary priests, and 9600 Levites.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000\">Significance in the Ministry of Christ<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">The Temple served as the backdrop for Christ\u2019s first recorded teaching ministry as a boy (Luke 2:46-47).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">Jesus held the Temple in high regard, saying that it should be \u201ca house of prayer for all the nations\u201d (Mark 11:17).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">On two separate occasions, Jesus drove out merchants and money changers from the Temple courts for perverting the intended purpose of the Temple (john 2:13-22;
