{"id":2253,"date":"2011-08-26T12:35:50","date_gmt":"2011-08-26T16:35:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.fbclafayette.org\/?p=2253"},"modified":"2014-07-21T10:17:03","modified_gmt":"2014-07-21T14:17:03","slug":"911-ceremony-without-clergy-involvement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.faithlafayette.org\/church\/911-ceremony-without-clergy-involvement\/","title":{"rendered":"9\/11 Ceremony Without Clergy Involvement?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Recently Mayor Michael\u00a0Bloomberg\u00a0of New York City <a href=\"http:\/\/www.christiantoday.com\/article\/religious.leaders.wont.be.part.of.911.memorial.service\/28501.htm\">announced that there would be no clergy participation<\/a> in the 10th anniversary observance of the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center.\u00a0 Many were stunned at this decision, including City Council member Fernando Cabrera, who is also a pastor at a Bronx church, who said he was &#8220;utterly disappointed&#8221; with the mayor&#8217;s position.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Cabera told the New York Times that the clergy\u00a0&#8220;were the spiritual and emotional backbone, and when you have a situation where people are trying to find meaning, where something is bigger than them, when you have a crisis of this level, they often look to the clergy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">They were there during the event.<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Chaplains went into the burning towers along with the other rescue personnel.\u00a0 They\u00a0ministered to victims , some of whom were in their final moments of life.\u00a0 They stood with the firefighters and other civil servants and served in every conceivable way.\u00a0 Some, like New York Fire Department chaplain Mychal Judge, perished in the tragedy.\u00a0 No one seemed to mind on that day if &#8220;religious people&#8221; showed up to help.\u00a0 Quite the opposite; their ministry was welcomed and sought.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">They were there after the event.<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>On the afternoon and evening of 9\/11, churches began filling with people.\u00a0 Men and women wanted to pray together for the victims,\u00a0their families, and themselves.\u00a0 The following weekend, sanctuaries\u00a0were filled to overflowing as congregants sought spiritual answers to the deepest questions of the human heart.\u00a0 In many cases\u00a0clergy members provided substantive help from God&#8217;s Word that began the process of national healing.\u00a0 It was a fascinating time as road signs\u00a0went from advertising &#8220;2 cheeseburgers for a dollar&#8221; to proclaiming &#8220;God Bless America.&#8221;\u00a0 Many churches reported significant increases in Sunday attendance that lasted weeks and months after the event.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">But not now?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Rudy Washington, a former deputy mayor under Rudolph Giuliani <a href=\"http:\/\/nation.foxnews.com\/sept-11\/2011\/08\/24\/bloomberg-bans-clergy-911-ceremony-ground-zero-mosque-ok\">said<\/a>, &#8220;This is America, and to have a memorial service where there&#8217;s no prayer, this appears to be insanity to me.&#8221;\u00a0 He went on to say, &#8220;I feel like America has lost its way.&#8221;\u00a0 True that.\u00a0 Perhaps the lesson here is that your real\u00a0heart is not revealed when the towers are falling, but ten years later.\u00a0 God please help us, whether we think we need it or not.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Recently Mayor Michael\u00a0Bloomberg\u00a0of New York City announced that there would be no clergy participation in the 10th anniversary observance of the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center.\u00a0 Many were stunned at this decision, including City Council member Fernando Cabrera, who is also a pastor at a Bronx church, who said he was &#8220;utterly disappointed&#8221;&#8230; <a class=\"read-more\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.faithlafayette.org\/church\/911-ceremony-without-clergy-involvement\/\">read more<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":15,"featured_media":2259,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[94],"tags":[4431,4434,4435,4433,4198,4432],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v19.14 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>9\/11 Ceremony Without Clergy Involvement?
