Fat, drunk, bankrupt, friendless, and stupid is no way to end up living life.\u00a0 As I recall, none of these characteristics are in the Ten Commandments, Sermon on the Mount, or even in the American Dream. \u00a0 But if you’re entering college with a party mentality, or <\/em>if you simply fail to guard against the influence of such people, you’re headed down that path. But you say, \u201cI will never end up being that way!\u00a0 I\u2019m just having fun during college.\u00a0 These are my years to have fun until I enter the real world.\u201d<\/p>\n

Planning To Fail?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Who has ever set out to be fat, drunk, bankrupt, friendless, and stupid?\u00a0 Okay, I will grant you that many have set out to be drunk.\u00a0 But fat, bankrupt, friendless, and stupid?\u00a0 Do you and your college friends sit around talking about how to be a skill-less, incompetent, poor, lonely drain on society?\u00a0 Of course not!\u00a0 But I\u2019m sure that you can think of individuals who ended up at that place.\u00a0 And those individuals have wondered, \u201cHow did I end up like this?\u201d<\/p>\n

No College Degree Required<\/strong>!<\/h2>\n

Welcome to the \u201creal world.\u201d\u00a0 Right now every choice you make<\/em><\/strong> <\/em>about the way you handle your courses, your money, your indulging, your friends, and your time steers you along a certain path<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 And come on, you don\u2019t need a college degree to figure out that every <\/em>path leads to a particular destination<\/a>.<\/p>\n

If you want to end up in Indianapolis from West Lafayette, you get on I-65 South.\u00a0 Taking I-65 North will never ever get you to Indy.\u00a0 If you want to end up healthy, sober, financially solvent, with an abundance of friends, and skilled, then you must make the choices now<\/em><\/strong> that put you on the road that has these attributes as their destination.\u00a0 Proverbs calls this wisdom.<\/em><\/strong> Proverbs is oriented around the concept of \u201cpaths and ends.\u201d\u00a0 Check out these verses:\u00a0 Prov 1:15-19; Prov 2:8-9; Prov 2:12-15; Prov 3:5-6; Prov 4:14-19; Prov 4:26; Prov 5:6-8; Prov 5:21; Prov 9:5-6.<\/p>\n

You Haven\u2019t Traveled This Road Befor<\/strong>e<\/h2>\n

College students, let me be direct\u2014you have not traveled the college road before.\u00a0\u00a0 You don\u2019t know the bumps, the potholes, the detours, and the end of every path.\u00a0 That is why we need a Divine GPS, God, who designed this world and causes it to always function in certain discernable ways.\u00a0 That is also why God planned for the youth (that\u2019s you) to be guided by older, wiser individuals who have traveled the path before.\u00a0 Check out the common theme in these verses:\u00a0 Prov\u00a0 1:9; Prov 2:1; Prov 3:1; Prov 4:1; Prov 5:1; etc.<\/p>\n

What Path Are You on Today?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Cool!\u00a0 I played four hours of video games today!\u00a0 I spent three hours on Facebook today!\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t matter if I use the college loan money to buy new clothes, beer, pizza, or a new car. \u00a0I’ll work after<\/em> college.\u00a0 Hey, I can hook up tonight with somebody for a little sexual fun.\u00a0 \u00a0It doesn\u2019t matter if I miss class again.\u00a0 I don\u2019t want to be involved in anybody\u2019s life.\u00a0 I don\u2019t need to spend time in God\u2019s Word.\u00a0 You know, many believers are lame; \u00a0I don\u2019t need them as friends.\u00a0 My parents, professors, and pastors don\u2019t know anything anyway!<\/p>\n

If that’s your path, please fasten your seatbelts and return your trays and seatbacks to their upright and locked positions. We are arriving at your final destination\u2014fat, drunk, bankrupt, friendless, and stupid.<\/p>\n
