Most mothers are equipped with a few common tools of the trade:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Band aids and hydrogen peroxide for the inevitable and frequent “boo boos.”<\/li>\n
  2. Warm hugs and gentle words that comfort and soothe even the strongest pain.<\/li>\n
  3. A smile that encourages and praises her children.<\/li>\n
  4. An ability to disregard one’s desires to meet the needs of one’s children.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    This is the stuff of Hallmark cards \u2013 the cards you likely gave just two days ago.\u00a0 It is the stuff of Mother’s Day.\u00a0 It is certainly appropriate to celebrate these qualities and characteristics.\u00a0 We are all grateful for these tools, and the others like them that I did not mention.<\/p>\n

    However, I would like to praise my mom (and other moms like her) for four other qualities that have rescued me from many sorrows.<\/p>\n

    These four qualities also serve as an example to all of you younger mothers.<\/p>\n

    #1.\u00a0 Fearing the Lord<\/h2>\n

    Proverbs 31:30 <\/strong>explains, \u201cCharm is deceitful and beauty is vain, But <\/em>a woman who fears the LORD, she shall be praised.\u201d<\/p>\n

    Mom, I am so grateful that you feared the Lord.\u00a0 You understood that God\u2019s holiness was significant and motivating for life\u2019s decisions.\u00a0 You understood that God was God and you were not. You understood why you, and I, so desperately needed Jesus.<\/p>\n

    Without Christ I would be forced to suffer God\u2019s wrath on my own.\u00a0 That thought motivated you to share Christ with me.\u00a0 Thanks.<\/p>\n

    I was learning that I needed to love the Lord, but also to fear him.\u00a0 Prov 1:7 \u2013 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.\u00a0 You helped me understand that the amount of my wisdom would be in direct proportion to my fear of the Lord.<\/strong> What a great lesson to learn.\u00a0 This lesson alone has preserved me and helped my feet avoid many snares.<\/p>\n

    #2.\u00a0 Reading the Word<\/h2>\n

    Psalm 119:105 explains that \u201cyour word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.\u201d\u00a0 Psalm 19 is a beautiful Psalm explaining the significance of God\u2019s Word.\u00a0 Mom, thanks for caring about the Word, for reading the Word, and wanting to share insights from the Word even when I did not want to hear them.\u00a0 The same words that I did not want to hear in one moment became a life raft from a burning ship in another moment.<\/p>\n

    Mothers who help their children love the Word, equip them for life.<\/p>\n

    #3.\u00a0 Disciplining the fire out of me<\/h2>\n

    Proverbs 22:15 tells us, “Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child; The rod of discipline will remove it far from him.”<\/p>\n

    Boy, did I have a lot of foolishness.\u00a0 I cringe to think back to my childhood and how I made choices.\u00a0 I was an idiot.\u00a0 I am sure there were moments where you and dad honestly did not know what to do with me.\u00a0 It seemed like I was beyond hope.<\/p>\n

    However, you kept at it (with some encouragement from dad!).\u00a0 You kept bringing instruction and discipline.\u00a0 I did not like it, nor want it, but you kept at it.\u00a0 In the end the Lord used it to bring foolishness (at least some of it … LOL) out.<\/p>\n

    Thanks for disciplining the fire out of me \u2026 I needed it.<\/p>\n

    #4.\u00a0 Warning me about evil<\/h2>\n

    As children often do, I thought in categories that were mutually exclusive (up \/ down, black \/ white, tall \/ short, good \/ evil).\u00a0 Thus, anything that was not automatically evil was “good.”<\/p>\n

    You often challenged me about this type of thinking.\u00a0 You wanted me to think in different categories; the appearance of evil either is or is rapidly moving toward evil.\u00a0 In other words, there was such a thing as a “slippery slope” or “playing with fire.” \u00a0In the beginning, I was too foolish to understand those connections.\u00a0 It was a hard lesson for me to grasp.<\/p>\n

    Thanks for keeping at it.\u00a0 Thanks for continually challenging me to think beyond the mutually exclusive categories and help me learn about the middle ground \u2013 a ground that every young man who wants to live for Jesus must learn to navigate.<\/p>\n

    Final thoughts<\/h2>\n

    I am sure that I viewed my mom in the “Hallmark” categories for many years.\u00a0 While I appreciate those things, I appreciate the spiritual lessons more.\u00a0 These four items are not in any card you’ll find at Walmart, but they are things I value.<\/p>\n
