{"id":1404,"date":"2011-04-21T14:07:01","date_gmt":"2011-04-21T18:07:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.fbclafayette.org\/?p=1404"},"modified":"2011-12-12T09:27:32","modified_gmt":"2011-12-12T14:27:32","slug":"how-the-passion-play-is-like-epcot","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.faithlafayette.org\/church\/how-the-passion-play-is-like-epcot\/","title":{"rendered":"How the Passion Play is Like Epcot"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1429\" src=\"https:\/\/faith-blog-assets.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/20170523133733\/How-the-Passion-Play-is-Like-Epcot-e1303334729562.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"174\" srcset=\"https:\/\/faith-blog-assets.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/20170523133733\/How-the-Passion-Play-is-Like-Epcot-e1303334729562.jpg 540w, https:\/\/faith-blog-assets.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/20170523133733\/How-the-Passion-Play-is-Like-Epcot-e1303334729562-300x97.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Ever been to Epcot?\u00a0 (I haven\u2019t.\u00a0 But I\u2019m going to talk about it anyway.)\u00a0 Epcot is a theme park located at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida.\u00a0 One of its primary features is a section called World Showcase, which includes shops, restaurants, and attractions that represent the culture and cuisine of eleven different countries from around the world, including Mexico, Norway, China, Germany, Italy, Japan, Morocco, France, United Kingdom, Canada, and the United States.\u00a0 It\u2019s a 150 acre microcosm of the world in which we live.\u00a0 The same could be said for what\u2019s taking place downtown this Easter.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>A Theme in Microcosm<\/h2>\n<p>If you\u2019ve been part of our church or following our blog this year, then you know that our church\u2019s 2011 theme is <em>Living Life Together<\/em>.\u00a0 All year long, we\u2019ve been looking for ways to build stronger relationships both within our church and within the community.\u00a0 We\u2019re doing this because we believe that where stronger relationships are present, better discipleship happens.\u00a0 And we\u2019re convinced that these things bring greater glory to God.<\/p>\n<p>As part of our Easter ministries, our church has traditionally sought to share the hope of Christ\u2019s resurrection with our community through the presentation of <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www1.faithlafayette.org\/church\/news_events\/passion_play\/\">The Lafayette Passion Play<\/a><\/em>, a full-scale dramatic depiction and discussion of the final events of Christ\u2019s life and earthly ministry.\u00a0 If you&#8217;ve ever been involved in the Passion Play (or really any major theatrical endeavor), then you know that pulling off a ministry like this is no small task.\u00a0 It\u2019s an undertaking that requires hundreds of people to use the time, talents, gifts, and energy that God has given them in service of the message.\u00a0 No single individual could carry out this ministry on his own.\u00a0 In an Epcot-like way, it paints a microcosmic picture of what <em>Living Life Together<\/em> is all about.<\/p>\n<h2>Flesh and Blood Examples<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Ken Sherwin<\/strong> is a career engineer with skill as a carpenter and a thirst for figuring out how to make things work.\u00a0 Using the training and passion God has given him, he has almost single-handedly designed and constructed a twenty-five-foot rotating turntable that allows us to present a complex story with multiple scene changes simply and efficiently through the push of a button. (Watch that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/video\/video.php?v=1996044385837&amp;oid=320328528309&amp;comments\">turntable being assembled<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Holly Richard<\/strong> is a caring and creative elementary school teacher with some incredible administrative gifts and a fantastic recipe for brownies.\u00a0 For years as our stage manager, she has kept the backstage environment\u2014which in many places is often both stressful and chaotic\u2014an enjoyable place to serve.\u00a0 From year to year, we have very little turnover among our backstage crew, and I\u2019m convinced that one of the reasons that&#8217;s the case is because of the atmosphere Holly creates.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Arvid Olson<\/strong> is a\u00a0Renaissance man with two degrees in technical theatre.\u00a0 His know-how and ingenuity have enabled us to safely overcome obstacles that could and probably would have brought our presentations to a standstill had he not been involved.\u00a0 His seemingly boundless imagination has helped us to share the story of Christ\u2019s death, burial, and resurrection in new and creative ways for over two decades.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Titus Curtis<\/strong> is a gifted composer with an amazing musical instinct.\u00a0 I believe that one of the most critical elements that makes our presentation &#8220;work&#8221; is the series of beautiful musical transitions that seamlessly carry us from scene to scene.\u00a0 Titus composed all of those transition pieces supplied with nothing more than sketchy descriptions like &#8220;starts unsettled and ends hopeful.&#8221;\u00a0 Unbelievable.\u00a0 And composing transitions was just his side job.\u00a0 His primary function has been to prepare our choir to communicate the power of the gospel through song, and he has done this expertly.<\/p>\n<p>Without the contributions of any one of these individuals, our presentation wouldn\u2019t be nearly as effective.\u00a0 And those are just four examples.\u00a0 <strong>Jonathan Smith<\/strong> and his team do an incredible job in engineering our sound and making it possible for the presentation to be heard clearly throughout the 1,190 seat theatre.\u00a0 <strong>Joe Wright<\/strong> makes our volunteer orchestra sound as good as many you might hear in professional productions.\u00a0 In her script, my wife <strong>Deb<\/strong> (about whom I am admittedly biased) has skillfully woven Scripture and spiritual discussion into the conversation of the play without making it sound forced or trite.\u00a0 I could go on and on.<\/p>\n<h2>Paul Talked About This<\/h2>\n<p>For months these individuals, along with countless others, pour themselves into preparations for this ministry.\u00a0 Then, for one week out of the year, they come together to worship, laugh, weep, sing, eat, pray, and serve\u2014all in the service of our Savior for the proclamation of His life-giving truth.\u00a0 It reminds me of the goal mentioned by the Apostle Paul in the book of Ephesians.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Ephesians 4:16<br \/>\nFrom [Christ] the whole body, being fitted and held together by what every joint supplies, according to the proper working of each individual part, causes the growth of the body for the building up of itself in love.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I\u2019m so thankful for the privilege to be involved in a ministry that so uniquely exemplifies what <em>Living Life Together <\/em>is all about.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 9px\">Epcot photo courtesy of <a href=\"http:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=User:DanTsu&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\">DanTsu at Wikimedia Commons<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In an Epcot-like way, the Passion Play paints a microcosmic picture of what Living Life Together is all about.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":11,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[95],"tags":[145,4295,229,4252],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v19.14 -
