A Great Conference in a Great City by a Great Organization<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Today, April 14, 2011 is the final day of the bi-annual conference of The Gospel Coalition (TGC) in Chicago.\u00a0 Over 5000 pastors and Christian leaders gathered to focus on the theme They Testify of Me,<\/em> which highlighted how all of Scripture, including the Old Testament, center on the person and work of Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n

Speakers like Tim Keller, Al Mohler, James MacDonald, and D.A. Carson ministered the Word in ways that were serious, practical, substantive and most of all Christ-centered and gospel focused.\u00a0 The Gospel Coalition is one of the ways the Lord seems to be especially working among His people in our day, bringing many men and women together around the common theme of the beauty of the sufficiency of the gospel.<\/p>\n

If you’ve never been on the Gospel Coalition’s website, (thegospelcoalition.org<\/a>), I would encourage you to bookmark it and check it regularly.\u00a0 It is filled with powerful blogs, cutting edge book reviews, and practical tips and tools for people interested in gospel-centered ministry.<\/p>\n

TGC and BCC: A Growing Relationship<\/strong><\/h2>\n

In many ways the Biblical Counseling Coalition (BCC; www.biblicalcounselingcoalition.org<\/a>) has modeled itself after the TGC.\u00a0 The BCC’s executive director\u00a0Bob Kellemen<\/a> recently said, “what the TGC is to the public <\/em>ministry of the Word, the BCC seeks to be to the private <\/em>ministry of the Word.” \u00a0Because there is such a mutual appreciation for the sufficiency of the Scripture in ministry by both groups, it is not surprising that the TGC and the BCC found four important ways to work together this week at\u00a0TGC conference.<\/p>\n

1. David Powlison\u2019s Workshop Session<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Dr. David Powlison of the CCEF<\/a> and Board\u00a0Member of the BCC,\u00a0led\u00a0a Wednesday (11-noon) session on The Pastor\u2019s Counseling Ministry<\/em>.\u00a0 This presentation was very well attended and gave the participants an excellent introduction to how biblical counseling fits into the overall mission of the church.<\/p>\n

2. BCC Q\/A Special Event<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Dr. Powlison, Garrett Higbee<\/a> (BCC BOD Member),\u00a0Bob Kellemen<\/a> (BCC Executive Director) and I led\u00a0a BCC Q\/A focused around Recent Advancements in Biblical Counseling<\/em>. This special event attracted a good group of men and women\u00a0from 12:30-1:30 PM on Wednesday.\u00a0 The participants asked\u00a0thoughtful questions and the time went by\u00a0quickly.\u00a0 At the conclusion, the guests were encouraged to speak individually to each of the presenters if time did not allow them to ask their question during the session itself.\u00a0 Each speaker had a crowd of men and women prepared to ask more questions.\u00a0 The interest in personal ministry of the Word\u00a0was very high.<\/p>\n

3. BCC and Pastoral Care<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Throughout the conference, the BCC\u00a0provided\u00a0pastoral care for attendees<\/a>. This was\u00a0motivated by\u00a0TGC and the BCC\u2019s concern for Christian leaders:\u00a0who cares for the care-givers; who shepherds the shepherds?<\/em><\/p>\n

4. BCC Booth<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The BCC hosted\u00a0a booth at the conference\u00a0with literature related to the BCC, sample BCC documents, and sample materials authored by BCC Board Members and Council Board Members.\u00a0 We actually had to scurry around and make additional copies of some of our materials because the number of interested men and women surpassed the number of original copies we brought to the conference.<\/p>\n

A Lesson about Coalitions<\/strong><\/h2>\n

We have said all along that as\u00a0men and women in the Biblical Counseling movement find ways to build stronger relationships and collaborate whenever possible, that together we can accomplish more.\u00a0 The openness of TGC to the BCC’s efforts seems to confirm that fact.\u00a0 Unity is not only a beautiful thing — it is a powerful thing.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
