His Sovereignty"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-170\" title=\"Bills\" src=\"https:\/\/faith-blog-assets.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/20170523133802\/Bills.jpg\" alt=\"Woman shocked at electricity bill\" width=\"175\" height=\"116\" \/><strong>Where do you turn when things go wrong?<\/strong> The way you answer that question reveals a lot about you and your God.<\/p>\n<p>This fall, we\u2019re taking our 3<sup>rd<\/sup>, 4<sup>th<\/sup>, and 5<sup>th<\/sup> Graders through a series called <em>Knowing God Better<\/em>.\u00a0 Throughout this series, we\u2019re looking at what the Bible has to say about the character of God.\u00a0 The goal of this study is not simply to learn facts about God.\u00a0 Rather, the goal is to understand God in a way that deepens our appreciation and love for Him, that deepens our relationship with Him.\u00a0 The goal is to understand God in a way that motivates us to become more like Him.<\/p>\n<p>One of the attributes of God with which we tend to struggle is His sovereignty.\u00a0 Apparently, the Blue family struggles with it too.\u00a0 <strong>I would recommend reading about their situation and answering the questions that follow with your family.<!--more--><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>The Blue Family&#8217;s Story<\/h2>\n<blockquote><p>It seemed like just another ordinary afternoon as Betty arrived home from work.\u00a0 She had stopped by the mailbox on the way into the house.\u00a0 She was opening up the mail when she noticed a big problem.<\/p>\n<p>BETTY.\u00a0 They\u2019re cutting off our electricity?!?!\u00a0 How can they do that?<\/p>\n<p>She quickly got on the phone with the electric company to find out the reason for the problem.\u00a0 She was not happy and she wanted answers.<\/p>\n<p>BETTY.\u00a0 What do you mean we haven\u2019t paid our bills?!?!<\/p>\n<p>She pulled out her check book to prove that she had paid, but when she looked through her check register, she couldn\u2019t find any record that she had paid the electric company.<\/p>\n<p>BETTY.\u00a0 I could have sworn I had paid those bills.\u00a0 I can\u2019t believe I forgot to do that.\u00a0 I\u2019m sorry, could you tell me how much we owe?\u00a0 Six-hundred dollars!!!<\/p>\n<p>It had been four months since she had paid an electric bill.\u00a0 And with surcharges and late fees, the cost of her electric bill had gone through the roof.\u00a0 If the bill wasn\u2019t paid, the electric company would cut off their power.<\/p>\n<p>BETTY.\u00a0 How are we going to pay six-hundred dollars?<\/p>\n<p>Just then Betty\u2019s husband Barney walked through the door looking tired and depressed.<\/p>\n<p>BARNEY.\u00a0 Honey, you\u2019re not going to believe what happened.\u00a0 I\u2019ve got bad news.<\/p>\n<p>Barney had not had a good day.<\/p>\n<p>BETTY.\u00a0 You think you\u2019ve got bad news.\u00a0 <em>I\u2019ve <\/em>got bad news.<\/p>\n<p>Betty began to explain the situation with the electric company.<\/p>\n<p>BARNEY.\u00a0 How can they do that?<\/p>\n<p>She explained that they had missed some payments and that their power would be cut off if they didn\u2019t pay.<\/p>\n<p>BARNEY.\u00a0 Six-hundred dollars!!!\u00a0 Oh, this isn\u2019t good.<\/p>\n<p>Barney sat down and began to cry.<\/p>\n<p>BETTY.\u00a0 I agree the electric bill is bad, but it\u2019s not the end of the world.<\/p>\n<p>BARNEY.\u00a0 What if it is?<\/p>\n<p>BETTY.\u00a0 What are you talking about?<\/p>\n<p>Barney explained to Betty that the car had broken down.<\/p>\n<p>BETTY.\u00a0 Oh, no.<\/p>\n<p>He explained that it would cost one-thousand dollars to fix.<\/p>\n<p>BETTY. \u00a0Oh, no!<\/p>\n<p>Finally, he explained that before he left work his boss told him he would be losing his job.<\/p>\n<p>BETTY.\u00a0 Oh, no!!!<\/p>\n<p>They both began to cry.\u00a0 With the electric bill and the car repairs and the loss of Barney\u2019s job, it seemed like more than they could bear.<\/p>\n<p>BETTY &amp; BARNEY.\u00a0 This can\u2019t be happening!<\/p>\n<p>They had no idea how they would pay to fix the car or how they would pay the electric bill or how they would be able to keep food on the table.<\/p>\n<p>BETTY &amp; BARNEY.\u00a0 What are we going to do?!?!<\/p>\n<p>And just as they were about to lose all hope\u2026it hit them.\u00a0 They would get help from the only one who was wise enough, strong enough, and powerful enough to help them with their problems\u2026<\/p>\n<p>BETTY &amp; BARNEY.\u00a0 We\u2019ll ask Bonnie!<\/p>\n<p>They turned to their daughter Bonnie for help.<\/p>\n<p>BETTY &amp; BARNEY.\u00a0 Bonnie!<\/p>\n<p>Their daughter Bonnie seemed to be in charge of their lives, and she always seemed to know what was right.\u00a0 She was constantly telling her parents <em>what<\/em> they needed to do, <em>when<\/em> they needed to do it, and <em>how<\/em> they needed to do it.\u00a0 Surely, Bonnie would have the answer.<\/p>\n<p>BONNIE.\u00a0 What seems to be the problem?<\/p>\n<p>BETTY.\u00a0 Well, we have to pay the electric bill.<\/p>\n<p>BARNEY.\u00a0 And we have to have the car fixed.<\/p>\n<p>BETTY.\u00a0 And your father just lost his job.<\/p>\n<p>BARNEY.\u00a0 And we don\u2019t know what to do.<\/p>\n<p>BETTY &amp; BARNEY.\u00a0 Help us!<\/p>\n<p>Bonnie thought for a minute.<\/p>\n<p>BONNIE.\u00a0 Now, let me get this straight.\u00a0 We don\u2019t have a car.<\/p>\n<p>BARNEY.\u00a0 Right.<\/p>\n<p>BONNIE.\u00a0 Dad doesn\u2019t have a job.<\/p>\n<p>BETTY.\u00a0 Right.<\/p>\n<p>BONNIE.\u00a0 And we aren\u2019t going to have any power?<\/p>\n<p>BARNEY.\u00a0 Right.<\/p>\n<p>BONNIE.\u00a0 And you want me to give you the answer?<\/p>\n<p>BETTY &amp; BARNEY.\u00a0 Right.<\/p>\n<p>BONNIE.\u00a0 How am I supposed to know?\u00a0 I\u2019m just a kid.<\/p>\n<p>They all just looked at each other and began to cry.\u00a0 It turned out that Bonnie wasn\u2019t in charge of their lives after all.\u00a0 They needed help and they need answers.\u00a0 But if they were going to get them, they would have to turn to Someone a whole lot wiser, a whole lot stronger, and a whole lot more powerful than they were.<\/p>\n<p>BARNEY.\u00a0 Wait a minute.\u00a0 I\u2019ve got it!<\/p>\n<p>BETTY &amp; BONNIE.\u00a0 What?!<\/p>\n<p>BARNEY.\u00a0 The TV!\u00a0 We\u2019ll find our answers on television!<\/p>\n<p>ALL.\u00a0 Yeah!\u00a0 All right!<\/p>\n<p>Just then, the power went out.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Questions for Discussion<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>What were some of the things that went wrong for the Blue family?<\/li>\n<li>When things went wrong in their lives, who did they turn to?<\/li>\n<li>Were the things to which they turned able to help them handle their problems?\u00a0 Why or why not?<\/li>\n<li>What did their response to life\u2019s problems reveal about their relationship with God?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>In Future Posts<\/h2>\n<p>We\u2019ll consider more about the Bible\u2019s teaching on the sovereignty of God.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Where do you turn when things go wrong?
