{"id":849,"date":"2013-11-04T11:04:14","date_gmt":"2013-11-04T16:04:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.faithlafayette.org\/4twelve\/?p=849"},"modified":"2014-07-25T13:37:50","modified_gmt":"2014-07-25T17:37:50","slug":"stewardship-of-adversity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.faithlafayette.org\/4twelve\/stewardship-of-adversity\/","title":{"rendered":"Stewardship of Adversity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"center\"><em>This year in our Sunday School lessons we are going through the books of James and Proverbs to look at the Practical Living from God\u2019s Word. \u00a0What is located below are the high level points we discussed this week. \u00a0Please use this tool to follow up with your teens and see how they plan to apply this to their life.<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><b>James 5:7-12<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Recall the 4 principles of stewardship:<\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>God owns everything, you own nothing.<\/li>\n<li>God entrusts you with everything you have.<\/li>\n<li>You can either increase or diminish what God has given you; God wants you to increase it.<\/li>\n<li>You can be called into account at any time, and it may be today.<!--more--><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>James 5:7-12 gives us four principles on how to be a good steward of adversity in our lives.\u00a0 That sounds strange to think about, but there is one key word that unites them all \u2013 PATIENCE.\u00a0 Let\u2019s take a look\u2026\u2026<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Recall that James 5:1-6 addressed the issue of the Stewardship of Riches.\u00a0 He discussed how some who had attained wealth had been \u201clording it over\u201d those who had less.\u00a0 Ultimately James points out that greed is sinful and leads to a lack of stewardship of material wealth, and unfortunately many who were originally hearing this letter for the first time suffered under such a lack of stewardship.\u00a0 So James now transitions to how those who are living under such challenging, adverse conditions can be good stewards of even those situations and opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b>I.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/b><b>Patience in Work (7-8)<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>i.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Reason to be patient: God see the whole of our lives and each step we must take to fulfill his plan.\u00a0 His plan is perfect so be patient for Christ is coming eventually!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>ii.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Application: Think about the farmer.\u00a0 We also \u201cplant\u201d by our deeds and we need to wait on the Lord for the ultimate reward of our works done for Him.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b>II.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/b><b>Patience in Relationships (9)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>i.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Reason to be patient: Show confidence in the justice of God.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>ii.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Application: If someone does something to us that gets to us, be patient because we will be judged for complaining.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b>III.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/b><b>Patience in Problems ((10-11)<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>i.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Reason to be patient: The Lord is in full control and everything will come out according to His plans.\u00a0 Take the Old Testament prophets as well as someone like Job as real life examples of people that lived in challenging times with many problems but showed great patience in their lives.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>ii.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Application: The Biblical record of God\u2019s care for His children is one of the best reasons for us to be patient (think about verses like Rom. 8:28-29).\u00a0 Or think about a verse like, \u201cFor whatever was written in earlier times was written for our instruction, so that through perseverance and the encouragement of the scriptures we might have hope (Romans 15:4).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b>IV.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/b><b>Patience in Speech (12)<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>i.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Reason to be patient: In times of testing and adversity, we must be careful that we don\u2019t make decisions or take oaths without realizing what we are pledging.\u00a0 Our words are powerful so be patience and use them well for God\u2019s glory and honor.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>ii.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Application: We should be faithful to our word.\u00a0 We should mean what we say.\u00a0 Pressure has a way of loosening a person\u2019s tongue.\u00a0 Believers must not be hasty in speech especially in trials.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>How are you doing at being a patient person?\u00a0 How can you work on patience even this week?<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This year in our Sunday School lessons we are going through the books of James and Proverbs to look at the Practical Living from God\u2019s Word. \u00a0What is located below are the high level points we discussed this week. \u00a0Please use this tool to follow up with your teens and see how they plan to&#8230;
