{"id":819,"date":"2013-09-30T10:21:22","date_gmt":"2013-09-30T14:21:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.faithlafayette.org\/4twelve\/?p=819"},"modified":"2014-07-25T13:38:07","modified_gmt":"2014-07-25T17:38:08","slug":"failure-confession-gods-victory","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.faithlafayette.org\/4twelve\/failure-confession-gods-victory\/","title":{"rendered":"Failure &gt; Confession &gt; God\u2019s Victory"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"center\"><em>This year at Faith West we are studying the books of Joshua and Judges in a series called, Everyone Did Right in Their Own Eyes. \u00a0It is going to be incredible to see the contrast between a leader like Joshua who was faithful to the Lord and the people who were seeking their own desires. \u00a0It is our hope that by giving you the basic outline of the lesson you can follow up with your teens to see what they have learned and to help them apply those truths in their life.<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong>Joshua 7-8<\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So last week we saw another example of things going well.\u00a0 The Israelites had come out of the wilderness after wandering for 40 years, they had crossed the raging Jordan river, they passed the test of having all their men circumcised in enemy territory, they had followed the command to march around the city 1 time a day, and they watched the walls come down as they screamed in the Lord\u2019s name.<\/p>\n<p>Surely if there would be any motivation to follow God and to be fully committed to what God says then now would be the time.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>I.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Defeated in the Promised Land (Joshua 7)<\/p>\n<p>A.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 We got this one (7:2-3)<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Joshua sent his scouts to look over the city and things looked very easy.<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 In fact they were coming up against a tiny little city named AI.\u00a0 \u201c\u201cAi\u201d means \u201ca ruins.\u201d In Hebrew it is always accompanied by the define article: \u201cthe ruins.\u201d This may not have been the name of the city, since it is a term that could be applied to any ruins. To specify which Ai, or ruins, is meant, the text states that it was near Bethel (cf. 12:9). (For the archaeological problems associated with Ai, see the Introduction, p. 248.)\u201d<a title=\"\" href=\"\/\/file\/users$\/jkjaer\/Documents\/sermons\/Everyone%20did%20Right%20in%20Their%20Own%20Eyes\/My%20Failure%20(teacher).odt#_ftn1\"><sup><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The total population of Ai was estimated to be only about twelve thousand men and women (8:25). Keil and Delitzsch (p. 77) conclude that a city of this size would be able to muster fewer than three thousand warriors. With armies of equal size, the defenders inside the city walls would have a considerable advantage. The confidence of the spies was inspired by their memory of Israel\u2019s great victory over Jericho and of God\u2019s intervention. Though it was only about fifteen miles from Jericho to Ai, the great difference in elevation (Jericho: 800 ft<a title=\"\" href=\"\/\/file\/users$\/jkjaer\/Documents\/sermons\/Everyone%20did%20Right%20in%20Their%20Own%20Eyes\/My%20Failure%20(teacher).odt#_ftn2\">.<\/a> below sea level; Ai: 2,500 ft<a title=\"\" href=\"\/\/file\/users$\/jkjaer\/Documents\/sermons\/Everyone%20did%20Right%20in%20Their%20Own%20Eyes\/My%20Failure%20(teacher).odt#_ftn3\">.<\/a> above) made this journey a rigorous climb.<a title=\"\" href=\"\/\/file\/users$\/jkjaer\/Documents\/sermons\/Everyone%20did%20Right%20in%20Their%20Own%20Eyes\/My%20Failure%20(teacher).odt#_ftn4\"><sup><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>B.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Defeated by the men of AI. (4-5)<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The soldiers went up to AI<\/p>\n<p>a.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Cities were built up on hills (called tells).<\/p>\n<p>b.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 In order to overtake a city up on a hill you had to have a plan because you were at the disadvantage by being downhill from them.<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 They took only 3,000 men<\/p>\n<p>a.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Probably their best warriors.<\/p>\n<p>b.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Why wouldn\u2019t they win?\u00a0 They were matching the size of the army of AI and they just destroyed Jericho without even fighting.<\/p>\n<p>3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 AI killed 36 of the fighting men<\/p>\n<p>a.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Now there was chaos and the men were fleeing<\/p>\n<p>b.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The people\u2019s hearts melted like water.<\/p>\n<p>C.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Joshua is disheartened (6-9)<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Joshua is in anguish and tore his clothes and put dust on his head.<\/p>\n<p>a.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 A sign of mourning<\/p>\n<p>b.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 At the end of mourning they would clean up and put on new clothes.<\/p>\n<p>c.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 He was arguing with God.<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Joshua begins to question God\u2019s way<\/p>\n<p>a.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Why didn\u2019t we just stay on the other side of the Jordan River?<\/p>\n<p>b.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Why would you bring us out here just to destroy us?\u00a0 Sound familiar?<\/p>\n<p>3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Joshua thought he had lost the leadership of the Israelites<\/p>\n<p>a.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Why will they follow a leader who loses war?<\/p>\n<p>4.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Joshua the Canaanites will no longer fear them.<\/p>\n<p>D.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 God knows the problem (10-15)<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 God knew the problem in the camp was that someone had directly disobeyed God.<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 God knew that unless this sin was taken care of the Israelites would not win the battle.<\/p>\n<p>3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 God told Joshua what to do.<\/p>\n<p>a.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Tell the people to consecrate themselves<\/p>\n<p>b.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Come before Joshua tribe by tribe<\/p>\n<p>c.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Then clan by clan<\/p>\n<p>d.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Then family by family<\/p>\n<p>e.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Then man by man<\/p>\n<p>E.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The problem is discovered (16-26)<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Achan is found to be the one who had the stuff from Jericho.<\/p>\n<p>a.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Can you imagine being Achan as it is slowly revealed that it was you?<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Achan was told to glorify God by confessing his sin.<\/p>\n<p>b.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 How does confession glorify God?<\/p>\n<p>3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Achan was stoned for the damage he caused to the Israelites.<\/p>\n<p>a.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Almost like he had murdered the 36 soldiers who had died.<\/p>\n<p>4.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Achan\u2019s sin resulted in 36 deaths, how could our sin affect others?<\/p>\n<p>II.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Victory over AI (8:1-29)<\/p>\n<p>A.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Notice the difference in the attack plans between chapter 7 and chapter 8.<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What attitude difference is there?<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Whose plan did they follow?<\/p>\n<p>B.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 So there are now 2 mounds of rocks in these 2 chapters.\u00a0 The first is over Achan (7:26) and the second is over the King of AI (8:29).\u00a0 What would the Israelites think every time they saw these stones?<\/p>\n<p>III.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Commitment to the Law (30-35)<\/p>\n<p>A.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Joshua built an altar to the Lord.<\/p>\n<p>B.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 They made a sacrifice to the Lord.<\/p>\n<p>C.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Joshua read the whole law to the Children of Israel.<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Why do you think he needed to do this?<\/p>\n<p>D.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Your sin is very real and you must deal with it.\u00a0 It can have an effect on a whole lot of people.\u00a0 Are you keeping a short account with God for your sins?\u00a0 Are you reading God\u2019s Word to remind you how to live?<\/p>\n<div><\/p>\n<hr align=\"left\" size=\"1\" width=\"33%\" \/>\n<div>\n<p><a title=\"\"
