{"id":814,"date":"2013-09-30T10:12:08","date_gmt":"2013-09-30T14:12:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.faithlafayette.org\/4twelve\/?p=814"},"modified":"2014-07-25T13:38:10","modified_gmt":"2014-07-25T17:38:10","slug":"where-does-wisdom-come-from","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.faithlafayette.org\/4twelve\/where-does-wisdom-come-from\/","title":{"rendered":"Where Does Wisdom Come From?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"center\"><em>This year in our Sunday School lessons we are going through the books of James and Proverbs to look at the Practical Living from God\u2019s Word. \u00a0What is located below are the high level points we discussed this week. \u00a0Please use this tool to follow up with your teens and see how they plan to apply this to their life.<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong>James 3:13-18<\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One of the markers for success that the world puts out there is wisdom.\u00a0 By what means is wisdom decided.<\/p>\n<p>We just discussed the power of the tongue last week.\u00a0 Here we are this week talking about where wisdom comes from and what it should look like.\u00a0 The tongue flows from out of the heart and wisdom comes from the heart as well.\u00a0 This makes this week\u2019s lesson extremely important in helping us learn how to live with wisdom which in turn will help us speak with wisdom.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>I.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Mark of Wisdom is found in Good Conduct and Gentleness (13 &amp; 15)<\/p>\n<p>A.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 According to this passage it becomes obvious as to whether something is God\u2019s wisdom or the world\u2019s wisdom.<\/p>\n<p>B.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Contrast the way the world\u2019s wisdom would have played out in the life of Christ.<\/p>\n<p>C.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Compare that with the way Christ responded.<\/p>\n<p>D.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Because the world has turned from God, it has lost its wisdom. Every increase in man\u2019s knowledge only magnifies the problems. \u201cThe fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; and the knowledge of the holy is understanding\u201d (Prov. 9:10). \u201cThere is no fear of God before their eyes\u201d (Rom. 3:18).<\/p>\n<p>But this false wisdom has another source: it is \u201csensual,\u201d that is, it is \u201cnatural.\u201d The Greek word is <em>psukikos<\/em>, which comes from the Greek word <em>psuke<\/em> meaning \u201clife,\u201d or \u201csoul.\u201d Our English word \u201cpsychology\u201d is derived from it. In 1 Corinthians 2:14; 15:44, 46, <em>psukikos<\/em> is translated \u201cnatural,\u201d referring to the opposite of \u201cspiritual.\u201d In Jude 19 it is translated \u201csensual.\u201d The main idea seems to be that of man\u2019s fallen nature as opposed to the new nature given by God. There is a wisdom that gets its origin in man\u2019s nature totally apart from the Spirit of God.<a title=\"\" href=\"\/\/file\/users$\/jkjaer\/Documents\/sermons\/Practical%20Living\/Where%20Does%20Wisdom%20Come%20From%20(teacher).odt#_ftn1\"><sup><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>E.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 In contrast to the wisdom that is earthly, sensual, and devilish, James describes a \u201cwisdom that is from above\u201d (James 3:17). \u201cEvery good gift and every perfect gift is from above\u201d (James 1:17). The Christian looks up to heaven for all that he needs. His citizenship is in heaven (Phil. 3:20), just as his Father is in heaven (Matt. 6:9). His treasures are in heaven, not on earth (Matt. 6:19ff). He was born from above (John 3:1\u20137) when he trusted Jesus Christ. The believer\u2019s home is in heaven (John 14:1\u20136) and his hope is in heaven. He sets his affection and attention on things above, not on earthly things (Col. 3:1\u20134).<a title=\"\" href=\"\/\/file\/users$\/jkjaer\/Documents\/sermons\/Practical%20Living\/Where%20Does%20Wisdom%20Come%20From%20(teacher).odt#_ftn2\"><sup><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>II.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Evidence of False Wisdom (13-14)<\/p>\n<p>A.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Envy (14)<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 This is basically an ego trip.<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Taking care of yourself first.<\/p>\n<p>3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 This can even show up in being overly spiritual.\u00a0 (I used to love being the devout Christian)<\/p>\n<p>B.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Selfish Ambition (14b)<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 This term is actually used in the Greek to describe a politician seeking votes.<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Get everyone to be on your side.<\/p>\n<p>3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 This is the exact opposite of esteem others better than yourself.<\/p>\n<p>C.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Bragging (14c)<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 This is the idea of letting others know how good you are for them to praise you.<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 We are to be doing everything for God\u2019s glory not for our own.<\/p>\n<p>3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Easy to boast about how great of things God is doing as a result of my work.<\/p>\n<p>D.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Deceit (14d)<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 This is being willing to let the truth be twisted in order to exalt you.<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 This could be out right lying or the allowing of facts to be misrepresented.<\/p>\n<p>III.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Evidence of Spiritual Wisdom (13 \u2013 17)<\/p>\n<p>A.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Gentleness (13)<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 This is a synonym for meekness.<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It refers to the right use of power.<\/p>\n<p>3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 In other words you do not use your power or influence to lift you up but only to glorify God.<\/p>\n<p>B.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Purity (17a)<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 This is living in light of God\u2019s holiness<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Spiritual Wisdom always seeks to be holy as He is holy.<\/p>\n<p>3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 God\u2019s wisdom leads to purity of life. Man\u2019s wisdom may lead to sin.<a title=\"\" href=\"\/\/file\/users$\/jkjaer\/Documents\/sermons\/Practical%20Living\/Where%20Does%20Wisdom%20Come%20From%20(teacher).odt#_ftn3\"><sup><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>C.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Peace-loving (17b)<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 This peace is based on purity.<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 As we all in the church live a pure life then we will have peace in our church.<\/p>\n<p>3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The church can never have peace by sweeping sins under the rug and pretending they are not there. Man\u2019s wisdom says, \u201cCover up sin! Keep things together!\u201d God\u2019s wisdom says, \u201cConfess sin and My peace will keep things together!\u201d<a title=\"\" href=\"\/\/file\/users$\/jkjaer\/Documents\/sermons\/Practical%20Living\/Where%20Does%20Wisdom%20Come%20From%20(teacher).odt#_ftn4\"><sup><sup>[4]<\/sup><\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>D.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Gentle (17c)<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 This means that you do not create conflict.<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 You are willing to seek peace but without compromising.<\/p>\n<p>E.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Compliant (17d)<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 This means that you easy to live and work with.<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 You are agreeable.<\/p>\n<p>3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 You are \u201cswift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath\u201d (James 1:19).<a title=\"\" href=\"\/\/file\/users$\/jkjaer\/Documents\/sermons\/Practical%20Living\/Where%20Does%20Wisdom%20Come%20From%20(teacher).odt#_ftn5\"><sup><sup>[5]<\/sup><\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>F.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Mercy (17e)<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 We are willing to not give people what they deserve not for our own gain but to show the nature of Christ.<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 God in His grace gives us what we do not deserve, and in His mercy He does not give us what we do deserve.<a title=\"\" href=\"\/\/file\/users$\/jkjaer\/Documents\/sermons\/Practical%20Living\/Where%20Does%20Wisdom%20Come%20From%20(teacher).odt#_ftn6\"><sup><sup>[6]<\/sup><\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The good Samaritan<\/p>\n<p>G.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Full of Good Fruit (17f)<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What comes out is a productive life.<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Good fruit cannot come from bad roots.<\/p>\n<p>H.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Without Favoritism (17g)<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 You are not going to change your beliefs based on who you like more.<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 You seek only God\u2019s wisdom and favor.<\/p>\n<p>I.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Without Hypocrisy (17h)<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 There is no scheming to advance you.<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 There is no spiritual politics.<\/p>\n<p>IV.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Results of 2 Different Kinds of Wisdom (16 &amp;18)<\/p>\n<p>A.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Worlds Wisdom (16)<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 There is disorder and every kind of evil.<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What current events point out this truth?<\/p>\n<p>B.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Spiritual Wisdom (18)<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Peace abounds<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Where can we see this truth shown?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div><\/p>\n<hr align=\"left\" size=\"1\" width=\"33%\" \/>\n<div>\n<p><a title=\"\" href=\"\/\/file\/users$\/jkjaer\/Documents\/sermons\/Practical%20Living\/Where%20Does%20Wisdom%20Come%20From%20(teacher).odt#_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a> Warren W.
