{"id":781,"date":"2013-08-26T11:13:05","date_gmt":"2013-08-26T15:13:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.faithlafayette.org\/4twelve\/?p=781"},"modified":"2014-07-25T13:38:27","modified_gmt":"2014-07-25T17:38:27","slug":"doing-more-than-hearing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.faithlafayette.org\/4twelve\/doing-more-than-hearing\/","title":{"rendered":"Doing More Than Hearing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"center\"><em>This year in our Sunday School lessons we are going through the books of James and Proverbs to look at the Practical Living from God\u2019s Word. \u00a0What is located below are the high level points we discussed this week. \u00a0Please use this tool to follow up with your teens and see how they plan to apply this to their life.<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">James 1:13-27<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Last week we talked about how good trials are.\u00a0 We talked about how trials cause us to seek wisdom, which provides the endurance for us to be able to mature into having the perspective on life that allows us to view trials as good things.<\/p>\n<p>James called himself a slave of God.\u00a0 Are you a slave of God?<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Today we want to look more into the mind of a slave of God.\u00a0 You see we have to get tot the place where we are not just hearing what we are to do, but we are carrying it out in our lives.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Process of Sin. (13-15)<\/p>\n<p>A.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Let no one say when He is tempted , \u201cI am tempted by God.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>i.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It is not possible for God to tempt people.<\/p>\n<p>ii.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 God is perfect and He cannot be associated with evil at all.<\/p>\n<p>iii.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What is the difference between temptation and testing?<\/p>\n<p>James just said at the beginning of this chapter that testing is good and that it comes into our life to help us have wisdom.\u00a0 So what is the difference between that testing and this temptation?<\/p>\n<p>http:\/\/www.iamsecond.com\/seconds\/josh-canales\/ (This video shows the result of a trial in someones life.)<\/p>\n<p>iv.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cGod sends trials to bring out the best in us (see Abraham, Gen. 22:1), but Satan sends temptations to bring out the worst in us. Believers should not say that God tempts them, because temptations to sin arise from our very nature.\u201d &#8211; Warren W. Wiersbe,<\/p>\n<p>B.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Process of Sin<\/p>\n<p>i.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Temptation comes from being carried away from your own lust<\/p>\n<p>a.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What is lust?<\/p>\n<p>Lust &#8211; expresses any strong desire, the context or a qualifying adjective determining its nature, whether good or evil.<\/p>\n<p>ii.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Lust leads to sin<\/p>\n<p>b.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Sin is anytime we step out of God\u2019s standard of holiness and allow our desires to be elevated above God\u2019s desires.<\/p>\n<p>iii.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Ultimately sin brings about death<\/p>\n<p>a.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What if you are a believer and you sin?\u00a0 Does that bring about death?<\/p>\n<p>b.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 If my security is sure then why do I care whether or not I sin?<\/p>\n<p>II.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 God gives us good things so we need to respond like they are good. (16-20)<\/p>\n<p>A.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Every good thing in life comes from above (16-18)<\/p>\n<p>i.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Every situation that GOd brings into your life is to produce good in your life.<\/p>\n<p>ii.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Even bad situations?\u00a0 (Romans 8:28-29)<\/p>\n<p>a.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 We get to be more conformed to the image of God\u2019s Son.<\/p>\n<p>B.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Therefore it is important that we respond well to trials<\/p>\n<p>i.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 How do we tend to respond to trials?<\/p>\n<p>a.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 complaining<\/p>\n<p>b.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 anger<\/p>\n<p>ii.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 How should we respond?<\/p>\n<p>a.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 slow to speak<\/p>\n<p>b.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 slow to anger<\/p>\n<p>III.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Be a Doer not Just a Hearer (22-27)<\/p>\n<p>A.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What is the difference between just hearing something and actually doing it?<\/p>\n<p>i.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What are some ways we tend to just hear what the Bible says and never actually do it?<\/p>\n<p>ii.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Is this being a hypocrite?\\<\/p>\n<p>a.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Yes I believe that Christ came to die for my sin.<\/p>\n<p>b.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Yes I believe that the Bible is completely true.<\/p>\n<p>c.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Yes I believe that the promises and warnings in God\u2019s Word will be carried out in my life.<\/p>\n<p>d.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 No I don\u2019t live by them.<\/p>\n<p>B.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Like a man looking in a mirror and forgetting what you saw.<\/p>\n<p>i.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cWhen Christians look into the Word, they see themselves as God sees them and thus are able to examine their hearts and confess their sins. But it is not enough merely to look into the Word and read it; we must obey what we read. A person who merely hears the Word but does not obey it is like a man who glances casually into the mirror, sees that his face is dirty, and goes on his way without doing anything about it. Such a man thinks he has bettered himself spiritually when he has actually harmed himself.\u201d &#8211; Warren W. Wiersbe,<\/p>\n<p>C.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Prove You are a Follower of Christ (26-27)<\/p>\n<p>i.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 If you think you are religious and cannot control your tongue your religion is useless.<\/p>\n<p>a.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Why is there an emphasis to make sure you are controlling your tongue?<\/p>\n<p>b.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The tongue is the outpouring of the thoughts of the mind which come from the heart.\u00a0 In other words the things you say reflect so much more about what you think about and desire.<\/p>\n<p>i.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 There is no such thing as a little dirty joke being okay.<\/p>\n<p>ii.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 There is no possible way to be mean with your tongue without it coming from your wicked heart.<\/p>\n<p>ii.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 If you think you are religious take care of orphans and widows.<\/p>\n<p>a.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What is the heart behind this?<\/p>\n<p>b.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 How can you as a teen take care of those who are hurting?<\/p>\n<p>iii.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 If you think you are religious keep yourself unspotted from the world.<\/p>\n<p>a.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What does it mean to be unspotted from the world?<\/p>\n<p>b.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 How are you doing at this?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This year in our Sunday School lessons we are going through the books of James and Proverbs to look at the Practical Living from God\u2019s Word. \u00a0What is located below are the high level points we discussed this week. \u00a0Please use this tool to follow up with your teens and see how they plan to&#8230;
