{"id":742,"date":"2012-12-11T11:36:10","date_gmt":"2012-12-11T16:36:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.faithlafayette.org\/4twelve\/?p=742"},"modified":"2014-07-25T13:38:45","modified_gmt":"2014-07-25T17:38:45","slug":"made-in-gods-image","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.faithlafayette.org\/4twelve\/made-in-gods-image\/","title":{"rendered":"Made In God&#8217;s Image"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We have spent the last several weeks focusing on the question \u201cWho is God?\u201d and we specifically looked at the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>God\u2019s creativity (Genesis 1-2)<\/li>\n<li>God\u2019s holiness (Isaiah 6:1-7)<\/li>\n<li>God\u2019s awesomeness (Isaiah 40:10-26)<\/li>\n<li>God\u2019s sovereignty (Isaiah 45:1-13)<\/li>\n<li>God\u2019s works (Isaiah 55:1-13)<\/li>\n<li>God\u2019s glory (Romans 11:33-36)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u2026.So how would you answer the question \u201cWho is God?\u201d<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>As we continue to dig deeper into the gospel message, this week we will begin to answer the question \u201cWho is man?\u201d\u00a0 Let\u2019s start at the beginning (which is usually a good place to start).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Genesis 1:26<\/strong> \u2013 \u201cLet Us make man in our <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">image<\/span><\/strong>, according to Our <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">likeness<\/span><\/strong>; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky \u2026\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What does it mean that God made man in His image?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Genesis 5:1-2<\/li>\n<li>Genesis 9:6<\/li>\n<li>James 3:9<\/li>\n<li>Colossians 3;10<\/li>\n<li>II Corinthians 3:18<\/li>\n<li>Romans 8:29<\/li>\n<li>I Corinthians 15:49<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The original Hebrew words for <em>image <\/em>and <em>likeness <\/em>had the basic meaning of resemblance, model, <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">representation<\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The fact that man is made in the image of God means that man is <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">like<\/span><\/strong> God and <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">represents<\/span><\/strong> God. (Grudem, p. 442)<\/p>\n<p>Although we are tainted by sin, we still bear the image of God (although it is a distorted image compared to His original creation).<\/p>\n<p>In your small groups, discuss specific ways that man is in the image of God (Grudem, pp. 446-449):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Moral <\/span><\/strong>ways \u2013 man has a sense of <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">right <\/span><\/strong>and <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">wrong<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Spiritual<\/span><\/strong> ways \u2013 man has a <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">spirit<\/span><\/strong> just as God is <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">spirit<\/span><\/strong> (John 4:24)<\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Mental<\/span><\/strong> ways \u2013 man can <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">reason<\/span><\/strong> and think <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">logically<\/span><\/strong>; creative; shows emotions<\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Relational<\/span><\/strong> ways \u2013 <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">marriage<\/span><\/strong> and <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">family<\/span><\/strong> give us glimpses of the relationship of the Trinity<\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Physical<\/span><\/strong> ways \u2013 physical <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">bodies<\/span><\/strong> and <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">senses<\/span><\/strong> allow us to experience everything God created around us<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em>Recall from our discussion last week in Romans 11 that God didn\u2019t need man.\u00a0 Yet, He chose to create man to bring glory to Himself.\u00a0 Not only that, He created man \u201cin His image\u201d unlike any other part of creation.\u00a0 Man is unique and special in comparison to all of God\u2019s creation.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em>Why is it important to understand this truth about man when digging into the gospel message?<\/p>\n<p>Knowing that man is created in God\u2019s image, how does that affect how you view other believers?\u00a0 What about non-believers?\u00a0 How should this truth impact your time over the holidays?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We have spent the last several weeks focusing on the question \u201cWho is God?\u201d and we specifically looked at the following: God\u2019s creativity (Genesis 1-2) God\u2019s holiness (Isaiah 6:1-7) God\u2019s awesomeness (Isaiah 40:10-26) God\u2019s sovereignty (Isaiah 45:1-13) God\u2019s works (Isaiah 55:1-13) God\u2019s glory (Romans 11:33-36) &nbsp;
