{"id":715,"date":"2012-11-12T10:26:42","date_gmt":"2012-11-12T15:26:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.faithlafayette.org\/4twelve\/?p=715"},"modified":"2014-07-25T13:39:02","modified_gmt":"2014-07-25T17:39:02","slug":"god-is-sovereign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.faithlafayette.org\/4twelve\/god-is-sovereign\/","title":{"rendered":"God Is Sovereign"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Quick Review:<\/strong>\u00a0 We are in the midst of several weeks of answering the question, \u201cWho is God?\u201d, as we continue to dig deeper into the gospel message.\u00a0 We have discussed so far that God is\u2026..<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the CREATOR \u2013 Genesis 1-2<\/li>\n<li>HOLY \u2013 Isaiah 6:1-7<\/li>\n<li>AWESOME \u2013 Isaiah 40\n<ul>\n<li>Why is it important to understand these truths about God when digging into the gospel?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All of the above truths are hard for our imperfect, sinful, human minds to fully grasp, but today\u2019s topic trumps them all \u2013 <strong>GOD IS SOVEREIGN<\/strong>!\u00a0 What does it mean to be sovereign or to have sovereignty?<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>When we say that God is sovereign, then what are we actually saying?\u00a0 Are you comfortable with this truth?\u00a0 Why or why not?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Do you feel the tension in the air?\u00a0 What about the issue of man\u2019s free will?\u00a0 How can God\u2019s sovereignty and man\u2019s free will exist at the same time?<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s dig into God\u2019s Word to shed some light on this challenging truth \u2013 <strong>Read Isaiah 45:1-13<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>V1-7 \u2013 God is sovereign over all <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">events<\/span><\/strong> and people in <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">history<\/span><\/strong> \u2013 past, present, and future.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Who is Cyrus and how do a few verses about Him tell anything about God\u2019s sovereignty?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>V8-13 \u2013 God is sovereign in man\u2019s <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">salvation<\/span><\/strong> and ultimate <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">sanctification<\/span><\/strong> because He is the <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Creator<\/span><\/strong> of man and of all things.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If you are a believer in Christ, you are probably thinking \u201cbut I chose Jesus.\u00a0 What do you mean He chose me?\u201d\u00a0 If you are currently not a believer, you may be thinking \u201chow do I know if I am chosen?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Read Deuteronomy 29:29 and I Corinthians 13:12.\u00a0 God chose to not reveal to us the details of how His complete sovereignty and our ability to choose freely actually work together.\u00a0 As with many things of the Christian life, it boils down to faith and trusting what God\u2019s Word says about salvation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Do you embrace the truth that God is sovereign?\u00a0 If so, what impact should that truth have on your life?<\/p>\n<p>James McDonald in the chapter \u201cGripped by the Sovereignty of God\u201d in his book called <em>Gripped by the Greatness of God<\/em> outlines three principles to take to heart when considering God\u2019s sovereignty.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I will be <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">obedient<\/span><\/strong> when told.<\/li>\n<li>I will be <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">righteous<\/span><\/strong> when tempted.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I will be <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">submissive<\/span><\/strong> when tried.<\/p>\n<p>Why are these appropriate responses to God\u2019s sovereignty?\u00a0 What is your plan given our discussion today?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Quick Review:\u00a0 We are in the midst of several weeks of answering the question, \u201cWho is God?\u201d, as we continue to dig deeper into the gospel message.\u00a0 We have discussed so far that God is\u2026.. the CREATOR \u2013 Genesis 1-2 HOLY \u2013 Isaiah 6:1-7 AWESOME \u2013 Isaiah 40 Why is it important to understand these&#8230;
