School has started.\u00a0 You have a routine, somewhat.\u00a0 The initial buzz of your teen\u00a0catching up with friends, starting sports, and so on, has now faded into the reality of quizzes, tests, and homework.\u00a0 Let’s not even get started on the “drama” that goes with it all.<\/p>\n

So how is your teen doing?\u00a0 Really doing?<\/p>\n

This short post is to encourage you as a parent to intentionally plan time with your teen this week to find out how his or her life is going?<\/p>\n

Let me give you a few tips\u00a0on how to\u00a0get into his or her world:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Your teen is probably busy too, so discuss today when would be a good time on a week night or this weekend to catch up.\u00a0 Indicate openly that you really want to find out how school and life is going?<\/li>\n
  2. Incorporate food\u00a0somehow (Not to escape reality, but to prompt discussion).<\/li>\n
  3. Go to a neutral, semi-private or private environment your teen is comfortable in at home or outside the home.<\/li>\n
  4. Start out talking about the fun and trivial happenings of school startup.<\/li>\n
  5. Find out who your teen’s friends are?\u00a0 What\u00a0your teen especially likes about those friends?\u00a0 What they enjoy doing?<\/li>\n
  6. Talk about school and activities.\u00a0 Is your teen doing his or her best?<\/li>\n
  7. What goals does your teen have?<\/li>\n
  8. What are the challenges\/struggles in his or her life right now?\u00a0 Share appropriately one of yours (Not putting down your spouse or others in the process).<\/li>\n
  9. Spend time doing something your teen likes doing.<\/li>\n
  10. Find ways to specifically encourage your teen verbally.\u00a0 Recognize the steps of growth and maturity.\u00a0 Thank him\/her for the improvements.<\/li>\n
  11. Ask open ended questions, like “What do you think it might look like for you to reach out to Bobby this week?”\u00a0 “Anything I can do to help?”\u00a0 Or, “If you were to pursue your best in this class for God’s glory, instead of just trying to get by, what would it look like?”<\/li>\n
  12. \u00a0How is your teen doing in his or her faith?\u00a0 Is he\/she growing?\u00a0 Where and how does Jesus fit into everyday life?\u00a0 How can you help with this.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Although the teen years can have some challenging times, and some gut wrenching times, they can also be full of awesome light-bulb moments, incredible victories, and just plain fun.\u00a0 I do believe though, to experience more of the positive, godly moments with teens, it requires us as parents talking with our teens regularly, intentionally, and outside the heat of a wrong decision.\u00a0 Find out how your teen is really doing.<\/p>\n
