McGuire\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peter_J._McGuire\">Peter J. McGuire<\/a> of the <a title=\"American Federation of Labor\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_Federation_of_Labor\">American Federation of Labor<\/a> in May 1882 <sup><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Labor_Day#cite_note-Bridgemens1921-1\">[2]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Oregon was the first state to make it a holiday in 1887. By the time it became a federal holiday in 1894, thirty states officially celebrated Labor Day.<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Labor_Day#cite_note-Bridgemens1921-1\">[2]<\/a><\/sup>. Following the deaths of a number of workers at the hands of <a title=\"United States Army\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_Army\">the U.S. military<\/a> and <a title=\"United States Marshals Service\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_Marshals_Service\">U.S. Marshals<\/a> during the <a title=\"Pullman Strike\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pullman_Strike\">Pullman Strike<\/a>, President <a title=\"Grover Cleveland\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Grover_Cleveland\">Grover Cleveland<\/a> reconciled with the <a title=\"Labor movement\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Labor_movement\">labor movement<\/a>. Fearing further conflict, legislation making Labor Day a national holiday was rushed through <a title=\"United States Congress\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_Congress\">Congress<\/a> unanimously and signed into law a mere six days after the end of the strike.<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Labor_Day#cite_note-PBS-2\">[3]<\/a><\/sup> The September date originally chosen by the CLU of New York and observed by many of the nation&#8217;s trade unions for the past several years was selected rather than the more widespread <a title=\"International Workers' Day\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/International_Workers%27_Day\">International Workers&#8217; Day<\/a> because Cleveland was concerned that observance of the latter would stir up negative emotions linked to the <a title=\"Haymarket affair\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Haymarket_affair\">Haymarket Affair<\/a>, which it had been observed to commemorate.<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Labor_Day#cite_note-Slate-3\">[4]<\/a><\/sup> All U.S. states, the <a title=\"District of Columbia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/District_of_Columbia\">District of Columbia<\/a>, and the territories have made it a statutory holiday.<\/p>\n<h2>Pattern of celebration<\/h2>\n<p>The form for the celebration of Labor Day was outlined in the first proposal of the holiday:<strong> A street parade to exhibit to the public &#8220;the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations&#8221;,<\/strong><sup><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Labor_Day#cite_note-labordept-0\">[1]<\/a><\/sup> followed by a festival for the workers and their families. This became the pattern for Labor Day celebrations. Speeches by prominent men and women were introduced later, as more emphasis was placed upon the economic and civil significance of the holiday. Still later, by a resolution of the American Federation of Labor convention of 1909, the Sunday preceding Labor Day was adopted as Labor Sunday and dedicated to the spiritual and educational aspects of the labor movement.<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Labor_Day#cite_note-labordept-0\">[1]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<h2>Something to think about:<\/h2>\n<p>If the original intent of Labor Day was to celebrate the strength of the economy, specifically trade and labor, should we be celebrating right now or praying?\u00a0 A few things go through my mind.\u00a0 Yes, I am thankful for what we have.\u00a0\u00a0Comparatively speaking(with other countries), we have a ton to celebrate. <strong><em>\u00a0However, are we today, ironically, demonstrating our ignorance to the reality of our present status as a country?\u00a0\u00a0On a greater level, are our spending habits a mere\u00a0reflection of our countries moral condition, thus\u00a0exhibiting\u00a0the\u00a0status of our\u00a0countries present foundation?\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0On a day when unemployment is high, we are celebrating?\u00a0\u00a0 On a day when our nation&#8217;s dept is astronomical and accelerating, we celebrate?\u00a0 On a day when markets are struggling, we are celebrating?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do I like Labor Day?\u00a0<\/strong> Totally.\u00a0 I usually spend it with family and extended family enjoying one another, eating great grilled out food, playing games, being outside, and maybe getting a home project done (yes, thankful for a house too).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why did I write this post?\u00a0<\/strong> <em>I wanted to help point our thoughts toward thanking God today for what we have while also recognizing\u00a0a bit of the irony of\u00a0the day.<\/em>\u00a0 My prayers go out to those today that do not have\u00a0a job, as well as our country as a whole regarding our overall condition.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Odd questions, right?\u00a0 Assuming Wikipedia has this one right, here is what Labor Day&#8217;s original intent was all about: The first big Labor Day in the United States was observed on September 5, 1882, by the Central Labor Union of New York.[1] It was first proposed by Peter J.
