Part 5 of 5"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>People choose many resources and philosophies to parent their children.\u00a0 Some watch the latest doc on Oprah or Dr. Phil.\u00a0 Some rely on experience.\u00a0 Some leave the job to everyone else.\u00a0 Some assume the philosophy of their church.\u00a0 Some try a hodge-podge of all\u00a0the above and just try to survive.\u00a0 What is your source of truth for parenting?\u00a0 For life?<\/p>\n<p>This five part series has focused on some basic truths about parenting that relate to answering a question that challenges every parent &#8212; &#8220;How do I get my teen to listen?&#8221;\u00a0 In the last post, we reframed the question to address a larger responsibilty we have as parents &#8212; &#8220;How do I get my teen to listen to God?&#8221;\u00a0 You see, obviously our teens will not live with us for life.\u00a0 If we train them to listen to God through his Word, the Bible, and obey Him, they will have wise direction throughout the rest of their days.\u00a0 Life will not just be about making mom and dad happy.\u00a0 It will be about making God happy and bringing Him glory.\u00a0 This brings us to our responsibility.<\/p>\n<iframe width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nIhiFac0Nhw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p>Having established the Deuteronomy 6 paradigm for parenting\u00a0&#8212; actively talking to our\u00a0kids\/teens about everything all the time (even things\u00a0we as parents don&#8217;t really care\u00a0about); listening intently to hear what is on their hearts; and talking with purpose to bring God into their world and worldview &#8212; we then\u00a0step into the New Testament to learn in Ephesians 6:4 that we as parents are not to &#8220;provoke&#8221; our\u00a0children\/teens to wrath.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Two issues arise here:\u00a0\u00a01)\u00a0our not provoking our children to wrath is not dependent upon\u00a0their obedience;\u00a0 2) you and I do have the ability to agitate our\u00a0children\/teens to\u00a0anger.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0How to we not provoke them to wrath?\u00a0\u00a0The secret lies in our obedience of God&#8217;s Word as parents &#8211;\u00a0\u00a0Deuteronomy 6:4-9 in particular, and in the\u00a0second half of Ephesians 6:4 &#8220;but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.\u00a0\u00a0Learn to say &#8220;no&#8221; lovingly, with a solid reason, and with teaching.\u00a0 Learn to give clear, adequate\u00a0consequences when your children\/teens do not listen.\u00a0 Take the time to not only teach your\u00a0teen why you made the decision you did, but also tell them &#8220;how&#8221; you arrived at that conclusion &#8211; the process.<\/p>\n<p>The Bible does have asnwers!\u00a0\u00a0My prayer is that this series has helped you in your parenting and has adequately, not comprehensively, answered\u00a0the original question posed.\u00a0 If it would be helpful for me to share how I have selfishly at times chosen to\u00a0not follow God&#8217;s word,\u00a0 let me know.
