Part 4 of 5"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Is getting\u00a0my child or teen\u00a0to listen a selfish desire?\u00a0\u00a0It can be.\u00a0 If getting\u00a0my child or teen to listen is simply to provide ease and satisfaction to\u00a0my life, this\u00a0selfish reason will be seen through quickly and dismissed\u00a0with\u00a0similar behavior from\u00a0my child or teen.\u00a0 However, a\u00a0couple new\u00a0questions begin to surface out of how we get our child or teen to listen.\u00a0 The first question is, &#8220;How do I get my child to listen to God?&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0This helps us.\u00a0 Getting\u00a0my child or teen to listen is not\u00a0for my benefit first and foremost, but is for his or her benefit and for God&#8217;s glory.\u00a0 This &#8220;getting my teen to listen&#8221;\u00a0has a much greater value &#8212; pleasing\u00a0his\/her Creator; living for God and others instead of self; respecting and submitting to authority; and much more.\u00a0 Bottom line, it&#8217;s not about having my son or daughter make my life comfortable, easy, or envied by other friends and those we desire to\u00a0give the impression that\u00a0we have it all together.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<iframe width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cF6qTeSziPU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p>This brings us to another reflective question.\u00a0&#8220;How am I modeling &#8216;how to listen&#8217; to my teen?&#8221;\u00a0 For example, the boy at\u00a0age\u00a0six that is trying to get dad&#8217;s attention whith his amusing story or typical joke of the day but receives only a few grunts and flippant glances while dad reads the paper or\u00a0shuffles paperwork, how does that model listening?\u00a0 After a few years dad will find out, because that same boy at age sixteen, while dad is trying to talk, will\u00a0repeat backt the same grunts and flippant eye rolls or glances while he has ear phones in ears,\u00a0texts friends, and or works on homework.\u00a0 Ouch!\u00a0 More imporatanly, this\u00a0reveals our attitude regarding how we listen to a\u00a0Holy God.\u00a0 How we listen to others reflects how we listen to\u00a0Him.\u00a0 It starts in the home!\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0How are you doing at\u00a0modeling a heart that is listening to God\u00a0(through the\u00a0His\u00a0Word, the Bible) and listening to others?\u00a0 How are you doing at modeling how you want your teen to listen?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Getting our teens to listen goes much deeper than just getting them to hear our words.
